The Spirit of British Modernism: Dartington Hall Trust

Painting a lively picture of twentieth-century British art, works from the Dartington Hall Trust by Ben Nicholson, Christopher Wood, Cecil Collins, Winifred Nicholson, and more are now on view at our London gallery.

Assembled by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst, the works reflect the couple's vision for social change and showcase the pioneering cultural environment they created. The works will be sold to benefit the Dartington Hall Trust.

Just Dropped: Hormazd Narielwalla

Pulled from a 1904 French dress pattern, ‘Between the Garden Lines’ transforms a complex network of lines and symbols into a vivid trio of screenprints, in collaboration with JI Editions.

Weaving together deconstructed embroidery and sewing pattern drafts, Narielwalla likens the intricate line work to viewing a garden through a spider's web, with nods to the fountains and follies of grand garden design.

“If you focus on the floral elements of the pattern, the lines disappear, and if you focus on the lines, then they disappear. It was an interesting way of not denying each object's existence,” Narielwalla explains.

Joan Miró's battle with painting.

In the late 1920s, Miró abandoned representational realism, declaring his dissatisfaction with brush and canvas and vowing to “assassinate” painting. He experimented with collage and unconventional materials, searching for new ways to express his aesthetic vision.

Yet 'Peinture' belongs to a rare group of oil paintings Miró made in 1930: luminous, ethereal, vivid, unbroken. Proof that even amid his “anti-painting,” he kept returning to the canvas with renewed intensity.

"What can I say, I can't be anything other than a painter,” the artist said. “Every challenge to painting is a paradox.”

Coming to auction for the first time in nearly a century, this work was once held by Louis Clayeux, Miró's early champion at Galerie Maeght, then under the care of distinguished collector Marcel Brient.

Painted in 1923 when Dalí was around the age of only 19, ‘El torrent de la Jorneta’ recalls the landscape of his youth and the childhood summers he spent in Cadaqués.
