Looking at the strength profile of multi-joint push movements, you get stronger towards the end of the movement. ๐Ÿ“ˆAdding a resistance band can help match the resistance profile to your strength profile. This is because the band creates more tension towards the end of the movement, and matches our strength. Pick a suitable weight and get to it!

What are the disadvantages of the DB Fly that Arnie used to lengthen his pec? I'm not saying remove this exercise from all programs because it does have its place... Just remember who's performing the exercise and take into account their structure and tolerance.

At the top of the movement (when the DB is placed directly over the shoulder), the tension is taken off the pectoral as the joints stack almost identically to the line of force! This means the muscle you are training has almost no resistance against it.

Also, due to the line of force being the gravitational pull of the dumbbell, even a weight that we don't deem challenging has the potential to put the gleno-humeral joint into a passive range. This may not be a bad thing in all cases, however this may increase the risk of the exercise to those that cannot tolerate that position. (Tip: learn about your own/client's tolerance and structure). A third point leads me to the length of the lever. The joint forces increase when the length of the lever(and point of resistance) get further away from the axis. As the DB is fixed in a somewhat straightened arm, we place more stress on the joint than if we were to attach the resistance closer to the shoulder (axis, in this case). ๐Ÿท

ANOTHER SHOULDER HEALTH DRILL:

Warming up and taking care of your shoulders is vital for those who train 5+ times per week to people who never exercise.

Resisted External Rotation should always be done with a band and not dumbbells as the forces and resistance means that the traps and posterior deltoids will take over. Bands mean that there is no gravitational force and the point of resistance is constant.
