Sedex was pleased to co-host our recent Sedex Community session on climate action and environmental management with the UK Department for Business and Trade in Hong Kong.

The discussion brought together perspectives from business, policy and sustainability leaders, highlighting several important themes:

- With global sustainability reporting frameworks evolving, environmental risk management in supply chains has become a business priority and will be implemented more precisely.
- Companies worldwide, including in Hong Kong, must translate climate commitments into credible, measurable action, especially within complex supply chains.
- Smaller businesses (SMEs) play a vital role in corporate climate action and environmental management, but need continued support from industry stakeholders through awareness, funding and technology.

Thank you to Chris Woodward and Walter Lin for opening the discussion, Tony Wang for hosting the event, and Eric Cheung for delivering the closing remarks. We also extend our thanks to Cecilia Kwei, Harley Addison, Lit Ping Low, Zach Denton, Merlin M. C. Lao, David Liu and Alice Su for sharing their insights and expertise throughout the afternoon, as well as MyiCellar for their support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the conversation. We look forward to seeing you all again and catching up at our community events in the near future.

How can businesses best navigate today’s turbulent landscape?

In the context of regional turmoil, abrupt trade policy changes, new regulations and demanding stakeholder expectations, sustainable practices are a critical continuity strategy. They help corporate teams to build multi-tier visibility, identify and prioritise major supply chain risks, and spot gaps in suppliers' mitigation practices to take preventative action.

Our latest eBook explores 5 ways to strengthen supply chain resilience through sustainability risk mitigation, including:

Triangulating different data sources to build a more robust picture of ethical, labour and environmental risk in your supply chain

Supporting freedom of association in your sourcing network - a key defence against exploitation, including forced labour

Collaborating with suppliers on both climate-related and labour-related risk mitigation efforts

43% of supply chain professionals aren’t clear about their Tier 1 suppliers’ performance, while only 2% have visibility into tier 2 and 3 suppliers.

Most organisations are managing supply chain risk with only a fraction of the picture. Yet risks linked to labour practices, environmental disruption and operational continuity often sit deeper within sourcing networks, further upstream where visibility is limited.

Risk is already inside your supply chain. Resilience is a decision.

Explore Sedex’s Risk to Resilience hub for practical insights, guidance and resources on strengthening supply chain resilience through sustainability risk mitigation, including how businesses can build greater visibility across their supply chains and prioritise action where it matters most.

Some of the most serious risks in supply chains sit where visibility is weakest.

Surveys regularly highlight that companies and procurement or supply chain teams have minimal visibility beyond Tier 1. Yet upstream activities such as agriculture, construction and manufacturing are some of the most hazardous industries for workers, in any country.

This gap between policy and reality is not always about intent. It's often about visibility. Organisations can't manage risks they cannot see.

With disruptions and stakeholder demands on the rise, stronger data sharing and collaboration are essential. A network-based approach can help improve data quality, reduce duplication, accelerate visibility and due diligence tasks, and build a clearer view of risks beyond Tier 1.
