Study after study into NHS primary care pathways shows that between 40% and 50% of daily triage requests, ranging from minor ailments and prescription reviews to routine chronic disease management, can be managed just as safely, and often faster, by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, an Emergency Care Practitioner, or a Clinical Pharmacist.

When practices optimise their skill-mix, patient waiting times drop, and GPs are freed up to handle the highly complex, multi-morbid cases they went to medical school for.

The challenge in 2026 is the logistics of keeping those specific, high-calibre multidisciplinary slots filled with reliable, fully compliant staff when sickness strikes or demand spikes.

That's the exact puzzle we solve at SHR Group UK.

As part of Scotland’s latest primary care contract updates, the Statement of Financial Entitlements has been amended to allow locum reimbursement for GP sickness from day one of absence, alongside a 28% increase to the weekly entitlement (rising to roughly £2,200 per week).

This move is aimed directly at reducing workforce vulnerability and boosting the local locum market.

Instant cover mitigates the immediate clinical crisis when a partner or salaried GP falls ill. How much would a policy like this transform your practice's operational peace of mind?

In one of the most significant developments in the UK primary care IT market in years, European digital health company Doctolib has acquired Medicus, the first new NHS-validated GP clinical system in approximately 25 years.

As part of the deal, Doctolib has committed to investing over £100 million into the British primary care market.

Why does this matter?

🔹 The UK GP systems market has long been dominated by just two platforms, Optum (formerly EMIS) and TPP. Medicus is the first new entrant to secure full NHS validation and national integration approval in a generation.

🔹 Doctolib already supports hundreds of thousands of clinicians and tens of millions of patients across continental Europe through appointment management, clinical workflow, and AI-enabled documentation tools.

🔹 NHS England has repeatedly signalled its desire to diversify the GP IT market and reduce reliance on a small number of dominant platforms.

🔹 The move comes as integrated care systems are prioritising interoperability, AI productivity tools, and administrative efficiency, driven by intensifying workforce pressures across primary care.

For GP practices and PCNs already navigating contract changes, workforce pressures and neighbourhood health transitions, the technology landscape is shifting too.

🕍 The word "locum" is over 400 years old, and it has nothing to do with medicine.

It comes from the Latin phrase locum tenens, meaning "holding the place."

And it didn't start in a GP surgery. It started in the Church.

During the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church needed a way to keep parishes running when priests were absent, due to plague, war, or simply a vacant post. So they sent someone in to hold the place until a permanent leader could be appointed.

Sound familiar?

Centuries later, the same idea found its way into medicine. And today, every locum GP, ANP, or paramedic who steps into a practice and keeps things running is quite literally doing what those travelling priests did, holding the place.

At SHR Group UK, we place locum and salaried GPs, ANPs, ACPs, paramedics and practice nurses across the UK. If you're looking for your next role, or need cover fast, we'd love to hear from you!

📌 NHS England just changed how GP Networks are run.

From 1 May 2026, NHS England updated the rules that govern how Primary Care Networks operate. It's called a variation to the Network Contract DES, but what does it actually mean?

🔹 More local flexibility

Previously, PCNs across England had to follow the same national rulebook. Now, local health bodies (ICBs) can apply to tweak certain parts of that rulebook to better suit their area. So if a local health system is doing things slightly differently, they now have a formal way to adjust how PCNs operate to support that.

🔹 More staff can be kept on through funded roles

The update also makes it easier for GP practices to keep certain staff, including GPs and Band 5/6 practice nurses, in funded roles. Staff who were previously supported through the Capacity and Access Payment can now transition into the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme, meaning their posts can continue to be funded.

🔹 What PCNs need to do

Most PCNs don't need to do anything; they're automatically included. But if your PCN has any membership changes, you have 30 days from 30 April 2026 to notify your ICB.

The bigger picture: This is part of the NHS's gradual move toward a Neighbourhood Health Service, where care is more joined-up and delivered closer to where people live. The rules are evolving to give local systems the tools to make that happen.

Chasing applications. Screening CVs. Checking compliance. Covering shifts while you wait. In primary care, that gap doesn't sit quietly; it's felt every single day.
