Today marks the 50th anniversary of UNESCOโs World Heritage Convention. This landmark treaty defined the kind of natural or cultural sites that can be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List. For the first time, it made the link between concepts of nature conservation and the preservation of cultural properties.
Since its launch in 1972, the World Heritage List has seen the inscription of over 1100 sites in more than 150 countries, representing the greatest natural and cultural treasures of humanity. It has been a hugely successful initiative โ beyond the sites themselves, the Convention has also proven to be a powerful tool to support heritage globally and strengthen its protection.
