How to report identity theft

Identity theft is when someone steals your personal information. This can be anything from financial data to details of where you live, your address, your email addresses or your passwords.

There are several ways to see if you’ve been a victim of identity theft – the important thing is to keep an eye on your bank statements and don’t ignore any suspicious activity.

If you’ve been a victim of identity theft, it can feel like an overwhelming process to get your financial life back on track. However, you mustn’t delay sorting the problem out.

- Report the unusual activity to your bank(s) immediately and cancel any affected cards.
- Contact Action Fraud to report the crime, as well as the Post Office – especially if you’re worried someone’s tampered with your mail.
- Contact Royal Mail if you suspect your mail has been stolen, or someone’s set up a mail redirection you didn’t authorise.

If you’re worried you’ve been the victim of a different kind of identity fraud – even if it’s not linked to your finances – report it to the organisation it’s linked with.
Get a copy of your credit report and carefully go through it for any anomalies or suspicious activity.

How to view a picture in WhatsApp without opening the chat

With more than two billion active users, WhatsApp is by far the most popular messaging app on the market and it continues to evolve, offering new tips and tricks. One of the few downsides to WhatsApp is that senders of messages are notified when recipients receive and view a message in a chat, but there are a few ways around this that allow you to view a message or photo or video in WhatsApp without even opening the chat.

It is possible to hide those blue ticks in WhatsApp, but there is also another simpler way to see content. Here, we outline five simple steps for viewing messages without even opening the chat.

How to view WhatsApp photos without opening the chat on IPhones
1. First of all, come out of all chats on WhatsApp.
2. Then press and hold on a particular chat and click the 'More option and then the 'Export Chat' option
3. Next, save to 'Files'
4. At this point, you can select a folder you'll remember and save the file there.
5. Go to the file where you saved the exported chat and there you can access the download and you'll find the photo you were looking for.

How to view WhatsApp photos without opening the chat on Android
Above, we explained how to pull off this trick for Apple's iPhone devices. But, what about Android? Well, unfortunately, at this time this feature isn't available for Android users to view content without clicking onto their WhatsApp chats in this way.
That's because the 'More' and 'Export Chat' options can only be accessed from inside a chat on Android and not from pressing and holding on a chat from the home menu. Perhaps this will change in the future, but for the time being this WhatsApp privacy trick is only available for those accessing the messaging app via an iPhone.

Money mules: how young people are lured into laundering cash

The job advert seemed timely. It offered between £500-£1,000 a week to work from home as an agent for cryptocurrency transactions. Lauren*, 21, was heavily in debt after a period of unpaid sick leave and leapt at the chance to rebalance her finances.

“It had been promoted on social media by a couple of people I’d been at school with so I trusted it,” she says. “It seemed such a coincidence that this came along just when I needed it.”

Breaking the heart and bank: How romance scammers are thriving during the pandemic

After splitting from her husband of nearly three decades and spending the past six years on-and-off dating apps, Claire Spencer thought she had finally found love again.

She had yet to meet him in person but ‘Jack’, who described himself as a ‘simple, fun-loving bloke’ in his Plenty of Fish bio, seemed to share so much in common with her.

They were both 49 and from Winsford – although Jack claimed he was based in Cambodia, working on a resort contract he had recently been awarded as a building designer.

When Claire told him she was looking for someone ‘who likes going to the beach and on dog walks’, he assured her that they were ‘on the same page’.

However, after two months of intense messaging earlier this year and one cut-off phone call later, Claire, 50, found herself not only nursing a heartbreak but left hundreds of pounds down. There was no Jack; she had been scammed.

‘I can’t even begin to describe how disappointed I am in myself,’ she says. ‘I suffered endless nightmares about being taken advantage and felt so upset and humiliated.

Marriott International estimates that 339 million guest records worldwide were affected following a cyber attack that took place back in 2014 and involved Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc. The attack, which emanated from an unknown source, remained undetected until September 2018, by which time the company had been acquired by Marriott.

The personal data involved differed between individuals, but may have included names, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, unencrypted passport numbers, arrival/departure information, guests’ VIP statuses and loyalty programme membership numbers.

The precise number of people affected is unclear as there may have been multiple records for an individual guest. Seven million guest records related to people resident here in the UK.

The ICO’s investigation found that there were failures by Marriott International to put appropriate technical or organisational measures in place in order to protect the personal data being processed on its systems as required by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham commented: “Personal data is precious and businesses have to look after it. Millions of people’s data was affected by Marriott International’s failure. Thousands contacted a Helpline, while others may have had to take action to protect their personal data because the company they trusted it to had not done so. When a business fails to look after its customers’ data, the impact is not just a possible fine. What matters most is the public whose data they had a duty to protect.”

Intent to fine

The ICO’s investigation traced the cyber attack back to 2014, but the penalty only relates to the breach from 25 May 2018, when new rules under the GDPR came into effect.
