♻️ This Week in Waste & Recycling 🌍
From reusable cups in Lisbon to ambitious recycling goals in North London — here’s what’s shaping the circular economy right now:

📍 Lisbon has launched a city-wide reusable cup deposit scheme to cut down on single-use waste at cafes and events. Will other cities follow?

🚲 In the UK, wishcycling is under fire — prompting a new awareness campaign to stop people putting the wrong items in their bins. Behaviour change is the goal.

📈 North London Waste Authority sets a bold new target: 50% recycling by 2040. Major changes are coming for boroughs across the capital.

📰 Stay informed, stay inspired — conversations like this and more will take centre stage at The Recycling Expo this October.

We’re pleased to announce that the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA) has joined The Recycling Expo as an official partner!

As the lead voice of the UK metal packaging industry, MPMA represents a vital part of the packaging and recycling ecosystem. With direct links into a European sector, MPMA plays a central role in driving operational, regulatory, and environmental progress across the industry.

From the aluminium beverage can to the steel food can, metal packaging sets a benchmark in recycling performance – up to 75% of all aluminium and steel ever produced is still in circulation today.

Through advocacy and education, MPMA champions and promotes the recycling and economic benefits of metal packaging, including its strength, innovation and its unique role in driving the circular economy. As policymakers and industry drive towards net-zero goals, metal’s permanent material status is a key enabler to realising closed-loop recycling. Metal packaging ensures resource efficiency and waste reduction at scale making it the perfect material for a circular economy.

Their deep industry knowledge and commitment to sustainable innovation make MPMA a natural fit for The Recycling Expo, and we’re excited to welcome their voice to the event.

The Recycling Expo takes place on 7–8 October 2025 at London ExCeL.
Tickets are free.

If you want to meet the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association and explore the future of sustainable packaging—come to The Recycling Expo at London ExCeL.

Scope 3 isn’t just a reporting headache — it’s a wake-up call.

💡 Over 70% of a company’s emissions typically fall under Scope 3 — those indirect emissions from supply chains, business travel, purchased goods, waste, and more.

Yet many businesses are still under-equipped to tackle them.

At The Recycling Expo, we’re going beyond bins and back-end processes.
We’re diving into carbon across every stage of the value chain — and the tools, data, and platforms helping companies measure, reduce, and redesign their impact.

From material-level tracking and packaging redesign to circular partnerships and digital carbon tools, this is where net-zero goals meet real-life solutions.

♻️ Co-located with the Trade & Production Expo, the event brings together innovators from construction, logistics, retail, manufacturing, and public sector — creating space for joined-up thinking and measurable change.

📅Two back-to-back roundtables in London this week brought together advisory board members from across the recycling, waste, sustainability, and supply chain sectors to help shape the agenda for The Recycling Expo and the Sustainable Trade & Production Expo this October.

🔄 In the morning, we explored how new legislation like EPR, Simpler Recycling and ETS is playing out in practice. The ambition is clear, but the path is far from simple and collaboration across sectors will be key to bridging the gap between policy and progress.

🌱 In the afternoon, the conversation turned to SMEs, profitability, and carbon emissions. From certification frameworks to transparency in the supply chain, one thing is certain — businesses want practical, actionable ways to be both sustainable and successful.

We’ll be sharing a full round-up of insights soon. For now, a huge thank you to all who joined us and contributed so openly. These conversations are shaping what happens on stage and beyond this October at London ExCeL.

♻️ Fast fashion is fuelling a global crisis.
It’s responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions and is the second-biggest consumer of water worldwide. In the UK alone, over 300,000 tonnes of clothing are thrown in household bins every year.

At The Recycling Expo and The Sustainable Trade & Production Expo, we’re putting textile waste in the spotlight.

From fibre recovery innovations to circular design and sustainable manufacturing – both events bring together recyclers, designers, brands, and policymakers to tackle this issue at every stage of the chain.

👗 Join us for truly circular conversations.
