This is the easiest fear-reducer you're not using.

You're struck by speaking fear before a presentation, meeting, or high stakes conversation.

Then you remember, this simple one-finger technique help you calm your nerves.

In this video, I walk you through a guided exercise to reduce fear fast.

You’ll learn:

- How to use it discreetly in real world situations (even when you see the price of gas - although I can’t replenish your bank balance with this trick).

- A bonus insight about the middle finger and anger (and it's not what you might think)

- A guided moment to help your fear dissipate in real time

⏱️ All in under THREE minutes.

You're speaking but you can see their eyes glaze over like a box of Krispy Kremes.

📊The visuals and hard facts aren't enough to engage listeners.

The tech specialists I work with already know this.

But they end up doing what most presenters do...

They panic‑add “engagement tactics.”

The most common I see are:

- A badly timed joke.
- A poll (again).
- An arbitrary question that reveals absolutely nothing except that half the room wasn’t listening in the first place.

🍥These are the presenting‑skills equivalent of sprinkling icing sugar on a burnt cake: decorative, yes.

Transformative, no.

There is a better way to keep attention without resorting to gimmicks.

And it doesn’t require binge‑watching 1,000 TED Talks or reinventing your entire delivery style.

It simply requires a better set of ingredients.

🎋Enter: The Spice Rack™.

This list of engagement techniques flavours your talks, as well as meetings.

🧂Some presentations only need a pinch of salt and a pinch of paprika.

🌶️Others need cumin, coriander, pepper and a squeeze of lime.

🔖Save this: engage others with ease in your next presentation or meeting.

When you think it's not all about you, it is.

“You” is one of the most powerful words in the English language—and one of the riskiest.

Used poorly, “you” triggers defensiveness and shuts down dialogue:

- “You always ignore my input.”
- “You’re just not a team player.”

It shifts the focus from behavior to identity - and that’s where things unravel.

This week, in working with an Engineering manager whose boss told him:

"You come across as combative not collaborative."

When he thought he was being direct, it sounded like blame. And when it sounds like blame, colleagues get defensive.

Even well-meaning feedback can backfire when “you” feels like a spotlight and a verdict.

Used well, “you” builds connection and clarity:

- “You helped the team hit that milestone.”
- “You’ve got options here. Want to explore them?”

That’s why I give reframes like:

- 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: “How do you see your role in this?”
- 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲: “Deadlines weren’t met: can we look into why?”
- 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 ‘𝘄𝗲’: Lean into ‘we’: “Can we figure out a way to stay on track together?”
- 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 ‘𝗜’: “I feel unheard when my ideas aren’t acknowledged.”

These aren’t just linguistic tweaks will shift your communication so that..

You get your point across so it's received and not rejected.

✨ Whether you're:

🔸giving feedback,
🔸facilitating a tough conversation, or
🔸simply want to grab attention quickly when you're presenting,

Remember:

It's all in the “you.”

There's so much to learn about working with others - especially when you're a manager.

But there's so little time.

So you enroll on a course, and 6 months later, you're still only on Module 3 - and it took you 2 hours to get there.

2 hours lost.

Yet, in 2 hours you could have covered FOUR courses from

"What's wrong with you?

C’mon. There must be 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 I need to fix."

If that sounds patronising, it’s the exact stance of some of the “leadership coaches” I’ve come across.

Thankfully not often.

But recently, I was invited to speak on a few podcasts: one hosted by a coach who seemed genuinely interested.

❓She sent over a questionnaire...about my presentation fears.

Kinda weird, as that's what I'm asked to do by CEOs to Engineers globally...

But I thought:

“𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘩, 𝘨𝘰 𝘰𝘯. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘬.”

So there I am, ready to talk about the communication issues I see specialists in tech grappling with...

These are people who already face enough noise without someone implying they’re broken.

Instead, every question funnels me toward confessing weaknesses… with the clear implication that I need her help.

Then the kicker:

"𝗔𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗺𝗲?”

In short: nope.

I’m running. Fast. Opposite direction.

Not because I think I’m above coaching - far from it.

But if your business model relies on manufacturing flaws in others, that's not coaching.

It's harvesting insecurity.

And if you can’t trust someone to speak on your podcast without your “magic touch,” that says more about your confidence than mine.

I know there are many other coaches out there who are the very antithesis of that: Karen Murray for example.

Those coaches empower.

No need to crush you so they can claim the rebuild...

What do you think makes a good coach?

“I’ll just wing it, ” you say.

🧙🏽‍♀️You think your charisma and Persuasiveness will magically kick in.

But like many of the leaders in tech I train, that’s exactly when things unravel.

Too many words, not enough clarity, and zero influencing power.

The real goal is simple: be clear, be succinct, and choose a structure that matches the tone of the moment.

📐Different situations demand different shapes.

A Board briefing is not an inspirational talk.

A five‑minute proposal is not a fireside story.

Yet people often treat them the same, which is why they don’t get what they need from the room.

Want three structures that kill the waffle and meet the aims?

╰┈➤One for briefing the Board when they're already checking phones.

╰┈➤One for inspiring a team that's heard it all before.

╰┈➤One for pitching your proposal in five minutes flat – without a single slide.

They're here: જ⁀➴

💬 “It’s other people you gotta worry about... Before you know it, you’re pouring your life out in search of something other people told you to go look for.”

- Alice Harmon, The Queen’s Gambit

We’re taught that success depends on others.
Getting promoted. Getting heard. Getting invited to the table.

It’s all about external validation, right?
But this quote pokes the system.

It asks: Are we really that dependent?
Have we, in fact internalised a story that keeps us compliant, quiet, and waiting?

Yes - if you want to influence others, you do need to consider what they think.

That's not you surrendering: that's you being strategic.

Influence isn’t about chasing approval.

It’s about choosing your message, your method, and your moment.

So yes, other people matter.

🛞But don’t forget - you’ve got a steering wheel too.

I nearly missed out on one of the best parts of my life because I assumed it ‘wasn’t for people like me'.

This week I’m looking at what to stop, start, and continue - the usual January ritual.

But the perfect moment never came.

That story I’d told myself became the perfect excuse to wait: to kick the ball own the road.

So I just… started.

And now I've not intention of stopping.

🎬 “Lights, camera… wait, why is the hob clicking?”

It's obviously not more gear I need - it's a film studio. Or a cloud that respects my lighting setup.

Yesterday, I worked with Jonathan Hancock, superb Editor in Chief at on my fifteen-minute course:

'Presentation Skills for Managers' with Mindtools.

It took five hours to film.

🖱️There was my audible mouse click.

🔌The shot that caught the cables in the background.

☁️The sudden cloud that darkened the room mid-take.

🍳The clicking that started halfway through another one. (That was me. I’d left the hob on.)

But I was elated.

Jonathan's eagle eyes and sharp hearing took the burden off me.

There’s nothing worse than powering through five videos only to find you’ve got an egg stain on your collar.

Or that you forgot to switch the mic on for an hour.

Presentation Skills for Managers lands end of January.

15 minutes split into manageable chunks of only a few minutes each.

No clicking. No egg stains.

Only easy to apply techniques that will make a big difference.
