SDGs · Scale · Systemic Failure

Right now, thousands of projects are running across the world in support of the SDGs. Health projects. Education projects. Climate projects. WASH projects. Economic development projects. Gender equality projects. Across every continent, every context, every income level. Each one has a log frame. A work plan. A budget. A team. And a significant number of them will close without fully achieving what they set out to do — not because the problem was unsolvable, but because the project was under-managed. Stakeholders who weren't properly engaged. Risks that were identified and then ignored. Plans that were never updated as contexts shifted. Teams that didn't have clarity on who was accountable for what. Lessons that were never captured or used. The SDGs will not be achieved by good intentions and technical expertise alone. They will be achieved — or not — by the quality of the project management behind thousands of individual interventions. That is where the battle is actually being fought.

Accountability · Donor Reporting · The Gap Nobody Names

Donor reports in the development sector are, almost universally, positive. Outputs delivered. Targets met. Success stories documented. Lessons learned written up and filed. And yet the SDG targets remain stubbornly out of reach. Programmes end and the same problems persist. The next funding cycle begins and the cycle repeats. There is a gap between what gets reported and what actually happened — and most people working in the sector know it. The gap is rarely about dishonesty. It is about a sector that measures what is easy to measure — activities, outputs, spending — rather than what matters: sustained change in the lives of the people being served. Effective project management doesn't just deliver outputs. It builds in accountability mechanisms that force the harder question at every stage: is this actually working? That discipline is what separates projects that create lasting change from projects that create good reports.

SDGs · Development Spending · Scale of the Problem

Every year, hundreds of billions of dollars flow into development projects linked to the SDGs. Health systems. Education programmes. Water and sanitation infrastructure. Climate resilience. Livelihoods. Protection. Now ask a harder question: what percentage of that investment actually achieves its intended outcomes? Research consistently puts project failure rates in the development sector at 60–70%. Not total failure — but failure to fully achieve what was promised to donors and, more importantly, to communities. At the scale of global development spending, that is not a rounding error. That is an enormous amount of human potential unrealised. Schools not built. Clinics not functioning. Farmers not reached. Children not protected. And the leading cause? Not corrupt governments. Not impossible contexts. Not insufficient funding. Poor project management. We have a fixable problem sitting at the heart of an unfixable-feeling crisis.

This Ramadan, we’re offering a special 50% discount on the Project DPro Foundation Online Course (Self-paced) as a gift to the development community.

If you—or someone in your network—want to strengthen your project management credentials and deliver better outcomes for the communities you serve, this is the perfect opportunity.

SDGs · Project Failure · The Uncomfortable Truth

Most development projects don't fail because of bad technical work. The water engineers know water. The health specialists know health. The education experts know education. What breaks projects is almost always something else — stakeholders who weren't properly mapped, risks that were documented for the donor and then ignored, teams where nobody was clear who was actually accountable for what, plans that looked clean on paper and collapsed under field realities. The Project DPro framework is direct about this: too many failed projects are written off as "circumstances beyond our control." Most of the time, they weren't beyond control. They were just under-managed. Project management in the development sector is not admin. It is the bridge between good intentions and actual impact. With the 2030 SDG deadline approaching, we cannot afford to keep treating it as one.

This Ramadan, we’re offering a special 50% discount on the Project DPro Foundation Online Course (Self-paced) as a gift to the development community.

Part 2: Commissioning – The Forgotten First Step

Why does your team exist? It’s a deceptively simple question—but few teams have a clear, collective answer. In Systemic Team Coaching, we begin with commissioning: aligning the team with its core purpose and the value it's expected to deliver to stakeholders. Without this foundation, even the most talented teams can drift. When teams are commissioned properly, their work becomes focused, meaningful, and impactful. They stop operating in silos and start acting with purpose.

Have you ever seen a team lose sight of why they exist? Comment below with your experience—or book a call with our certified coaches to discuss how commissioning can transform your team’s focus.

Part 1: What Makes a Team Truly Effective?

We often judge teams by how well individuals perform. But what if the real power lies in how the system of the team functions? Systemic Team Coaching goes beyond fixing surface-level dynamics—it's about helping the team operate as a living, connected system that delivers value not only internally, but to its entire network of stakeholders. This approach builds shared purpose, clarity of roles, and the ability to learn and adapt together. If you're part of a leadership team or manage one, ask yourself: is your team merely functioning—or thriving systemically?

We'd love to hear—how does your team currently navigate its internal and external challenges? Share in the comments, or book a call with one of our certified coaches to explore how systemic coaching could benefit your team.

According to the Project Management Institute (PMI), more than 50% of international development projects in Africa have failed, despite significant investments by organizations like the World Bank, which has invested over US$5 billion in approximately 700 projects in the region over the past two decades.

Such high failure rates highlight the critical need for effective project management practices in the development sector. Project DPro offers a globally recognized framework tailored specifically for NGOs and community-based organizations, equipping professionals with practical tools to navigate real-world challenges and deliver meaningful results.

We provide Project DPro training in three flexible formats to suit your learning preferences: In-person, Recorded, and Live Online sessions. Join thousands of professionals worldwide who are enhancing their project management skills and making a tangible impact in their communities.
