Join GCHQ and your administrative talents will play a vital role in helping to keep the country safe. Whether you’re organising meetings and diaries, managing our information and records, booking travel, looking after visitors, uploading reports or providing essential support to our officers, you’ll be playing a part in ensuring our organisation runs smoothly and professionally.
Our Administrative Officers work across a variety of departments, offering a range of roles, diverse challenges and direct insight into the fascinating work of MI5. With opportunities to broaden and enhance your administrative skills, you can look forward to a rewarding and stimulating career.
Who we’re looking for
This is an ideal role for school leavers, people coming back to work after a career break or those looking for a change of career. You will have strong organisational and communication skills and an eye for detail, be able to work independently and within a busy team, and demonstrate flexibility and a commitment to the role. You’ll also need to have IT skills, including the ability to use email, the internet, MS Word and Excel.
You will need five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A*-C/9-4 or relevant office-based experience. Whilst we accept applications from graduates for this role, you should note that it is not a graduate level position. Our Intelligence Officer Development Programme (IODP), Intelligence Data Analyst Development Programme (IDADP) and Technology Graduate Development Programme (TGDP) are more suited to those looking for a graduate job. We recruit for the IODP and TGDP several times a year.
Due to the sensitive nature of our work, you will need to be very discreet. Our staff cannot discuss their work or tell anyone except their partner and close family members that they work for MI5.
Rewards and Benefits
In return, you will receive a range of benefits and the opportunity to strike a work-life balance that suits you. Plus, you will come to work every day knowing you are playing an invaluable role in helping to protect the UK.
If you are looking for part-time working opportunities you will be required to work a minimum of 3 days, totalling 21.6 hours per week, between Monday and Friday.
Before you apply
The role is based in London. You will need to live within a commutable distance and you should consider the financial implications and practicalities of working in Central London prior to submitting an application. Please note: we do not cover relocation costs.
Honesty and integrity are crucial if you want to work at GCHQ. You should read about the vetting process and satisfy yourself that you meet the criteria outlined in the vetting pages of the ‘How to Apply’ section prior to submitting an application.
Giving misleading information and omitting or concealing information during the recruitment and vetting process is viewed very seriously. You should ensure that you follow our guidance from when you apply.
