The 15th to 22nd of July in Vilinus, Lithuania took place the Pillar Unconference. The New Kids On The Blockchain collaborated with Radix at their inaugural 'Hackathon' as part of the conference. Aga Gajownik facilitates the event using SCRUM Educational Experience.

"Our hackathon was different though. We modelled the event so that people know what to do, when to do it and what to focus on. They could get lost in thought and find their best idea, as long as they did it by the deadline. Then they could move on to the next task.

I must say, it went fantastically well.
Every tutor was guiding a team through the process, asking the right questions and making sure they stay on track. Resisting the urge to step in and help them with their project, too. It was all organised in hour long sprints and by the time of the final one, everyone had the most ingenious ideas, problem statements, solutions, prototypes and pitches".

"Overcome the barriers to FinTech innovation with Open Payments Cloud." STEAM Challenge at Depford Green for over 200 students Year 8!

The goal of the challenge was to inspire young people to consider careers in STEM, whilst building their confidence and team working skills. We gave students the opportunity to explore, experiment and innovate, this could involve designing a new product, service, app or even website.

How to inspire young people into technology? - SEE event at Stephen Lawrence Trust.

Three groups of aged 12 children participated in our SEE event. There were six sprints in the competition. The main goal was to build an app with Open Payment Cloud technology to connect prepaid cards with it. This was a solution for children whose parents cannot afford to send them to the city for work experience . Children were incredibly creative. Hackathon like events with SCRUM Educational Experience framework clearly shows that learning is much more efficient through experience.

Another SEE event for Year 9 students from Sedgehill School took place on 08.12.2017 at Allia Future Business Centre.

The event was coordinated by Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and the goal was to present to students the SCRUM Educational Experience framework and inspire them into the tech industry.

Students spent a whole day at Allia Future Business Centre to understand what is a co-working and incubation space. They also saw how entrepreneurs work in a place like that. Some of them shared their story and present their startups what was incredibly inspiring and helped children understand how important technology is nowadays.

How does the SEE event framework accommodate creativity needs?

SEE urges students to come up with their ideas. Hack moderators show how to collaborate, create genuine teamwork, brainstorm and do active listening. Entrepreneurship requires all those activities. The earlier we start to guide how to survive in high-tech business with success, the better outcome it will bring in the future. Agile methods during hackathons show how participants can manage their potential and be a part of high-tech innovations.

How our hackathons differ compared to more traditional ones?

Traditionally, a hackathon is an event where participants are presented with a theme or challenge and compete in teams to produce a piece of software or a product in response. At the end of the event, all of the teams pitch their creations to a panel of judges. I was introduced to the format several times and each time I found the experience of participating and mentoring interesting.


After research and experiment with different learning frameworks we eventually settling on SCRUM – an Agile Framework, traditionally used in managing software development. It is designed for teams who break their work into actions that can be completed within fixed duration cycles called “sprints”. Each sprint has a theme and a challenge attached to it. Participants are led through different stages of product/business design process and through experiential learning they acquire the knowledge.

SEE developing confident and professional mindsets ready to add value to the Tech industry. The main aim is to inspire young people to consider careers in STEM, whilst building their confidence and team working skills. We would like to give students the opportunity to explore, experiment and innovate, this could involve designing a new product, service, app or even website.

We tested it first at Barking & Dagenham College during Inspiration Day and it worked!
