‘Painting is closest to poetry of all the arts… You can’t put your finger on it, that’s what my work’s about’ —Cecily Brown

Announced as the top lot of Christie’s London Summer Season, leading the Post-War to Present sale, Cecily Brown’s ‘The Haunter’ is a beguiling collision of colour and texture.

Drawing on Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz and the uncanny worlds of Shirley Jackson, Brown conjures something instinctive and elusive, where the human, natural and supernatural combine. Verdant greens and icy blues pulse against flashes of ruby, violet and white as paint streaks, dissolves and reforms — until a branch, a figure, a ghost of flesh surfaces, then slips away.

Following a major exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, this is a rare moment to experience — and acquire — one of Cecily Brown’s most compelling works.

The world’s first ‘It’ bag, the Fendi Baguette has seen over 1,000 iterations since its 1997 debut.

🥖 Compact and rectangular, the bag was inspired by the eponymous French bread and the custom of carrying it tucked under one arm. Over nearly 30 years, the Baguette has developed a cult following and appeared on the arm of on-screen icons like Carrie Bradshaw and superstars like Elizabeth Taylor.

In this video, Christie's Head of Handbags Max Brownawell takes us through a quick history and curation of vintage Baguettes — including two from Elizabeth Taylor's personal collection — now on view at our Rockefeller Center galleries.

Louis Comfort Tiffany’s eponymous Studios would not be at the pinnacle of American stained glass making without the help of a group of women known as ‘The Tiffany Girls’.

In the late 1800s, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s company hired women such as Agnes Northrop and Clara Driscoll to be part of the new Women’s Glass Cutting Department. Growing to a team of dozens, these women were responsible for carefully selecting and cutting each piece of glass, and applying the copper foil for assembly. Behind the scenes, they were the colour specialists and designers behind some of Tiffany’s most celebrated glassworks, building texture with mottled plates and capturing the kinetic energy of nature through light itself.

In 'The Boyd Family Memorial Window (The Falls)', for Second Congregational Church, Winsted, Connecticut, 1898, these artisans used their skills to capture cascading falls, swaying palm fronds and delicate blossoms to present a superb example of Tiffany's naturalistic style.

🐸 ‘Well, if you can make a toilet, you can probably turn the frog into a fountain, yes?’ American designer and collector Alexandra Marshall quipped to François-Xavier Lalanne upon encountering ‘Crapaud’, a plastic seat depicting a frog, at a Parisian gallery in 1981.

‘He replied, “Yes — and we can have the mouth open.” I added, “And it can spit water.”’ With a smile, he agreed, and just like that, the commission for four ‘Grenouille’ fountains was born.

Installed around the swimming pool of Marshall’s Houston home, the bronze frogs — the first of this size — became part of a dreamlike landscape of water lilies, sculpture and whimsical invention. ‘The sound of water made François’ frogs extraordinary to live with’, Marshall recalled years later. Visiting children frequently asked, ‘Can we turn on the frogs?’

Elegant yet mischievous, surreal yet somehow at home in a garden, the ‘Grenouille’ fountains remain a perfect expression of the Lalanne’s restrained playfulness — and of a relationship that began with a laugh in a Parisian gallery.
