Keith Andrews

A couple of weeks back The Times and The Sunday Times commissioned me to photograph manager of Brentford FC manager Keith Andrews.
There are only 20 Premier League managers, so the chance to shoot a ‘one on one’ portraits is rare.
Even more so for editorial.
Massive thanks to sports picture editor Alan for the trust and can’t wait to do some more for you soon!

The venue was the club training ground and if I’m honest, there isn’t an awful lot of choice in terms of background/location.
Fortunately I know the head of media Chris pretty well and so I was relaxed going in, knowing he and his colleagues would do their best to help me.

First location was a changing room with some wood paneling and club badges behind.
Little bit obvious but not terrible.
I managed to persuade Keith to give me another couple of minutes and moved outside where there was a club badge and wording on the building.
This gave me the alternatives I wanted to ensure the paper had enough of a selection of images.
In 5 minutes, it was all done.
Never enough time, always want another location.

It looked great across a DPS the following Saturday.
I will never, ever tire of seeing my work in print. The ultimate thrill.

The NFL is on its annual global tour and european pressphoto agency commissioned me to shoot Denver Broncos v New York Jets at Spurs stadium last weekend.

I don’t mind the sport, have actually been to a couple of games as a fan in the States. However, I’m not that bothered about the idea of it being played away from there.
It’s got the largest TV deal for a single sport, in a single market in the world. However, it pails into insignificance compared to global soccer TV deals.
Ultimately, like all sport these days, it’s about money.
The stadium transformation is amazing. The place looks incredible and really ‘feels’ like it was built for NFL. With one issue.
Photographer sight lines were terrible.
The run off from the end zone was far too tight to be suitable to work from there, with the exception of the NFL official photographers.
This meant I, along with most other snappers, had to work along the side line.
This would have been fine except for the dozens of people standing between us and the athletes.
I would estimate I could see the action less than 40% of the time.
I was literally blocked from play.
Terrible planning and ex*****on by the stadium and NFL.
It was hugely disappointing.
Alongside this, it was a dog of a game!
Putting all that aside, it’s clear that NFL is a product for TV.
The sheer time it takes for a 60 minute game is insane, 3+ hours. Although an NFL game is an hour on the clock, the actual time the ball is in play is only about 11 to 15 minutes in total.
* This includes both runs and passes, special teams, etc.
* The rest of the time is spent on huddles, substitutions, replays, commercials, stoppages, penalties, etc.

This blows my mind - all the effort, people, time, money and the game lasts 11-15 mins! Bonkers.

So, in the end, I was pleased to get a couple of decent pictures and now would love the chance to shoot an NFL game without the restrictions outlined above.
Big thanks to Milica for the commission and huge shout out to Erik in Atlanta for editing for me - without his help I wouldn’t have been able to work anywhere near as effectively.

𝑶𝒍𝒆𝒌𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒓 𝑼𝒔𝒚𝒌 𝒗 𝑫𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒆𝒍 𝑫𝒖𝒃𝒐𝒊𝒔

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to be assigned by european pressphoto agency to cover the Undisputed World Heavy Weight Championship bout at Wembley Stadium.
I’ve shot boxing before, but this was without doubt the highest profile event for me in this sport.
The world was watching as Usyk beat in the 5th round to cement his place as an all time great.

The physical environment for shooting was extremely difficult.
A digital ad board ran around the entire ring meaning as photographers we were 18” or so from the actual ring.
This meant I was unable to get myself underneath the ropes, they partially obscured my view.
Shooting on a slightly longer focal length (around 135mm) gave me a clean shot of the upper bodies of the fighters, but I obviously wanted full length shots for when the moment came and one of them was on the canvas.
I was very fortunate to have had a chat a few weeks before hand with colleague - one of the very best boxing photographers in the business - who gave me the heads up about the ad board and advised me to bring elbow pads! Leaning on the board itself would be very painful…Top man Andy - thanks for the pro tip…..

Andy and myself were among maybe 10 photographers and videographers ringside, space was tight.
My position was immediately next to Usyk’s corner - the most fascinating aspect for me was listening to the words one of this (English speaking) trainers was giving him.
Usky is a world class athlete, clearly. Seeing him at close quarters was a privilege.

Massive thanks to Milica for the commission and support, plus big shout to Eric for remote editing
