If your CV is not getting responses, it does not always mean you lack experience.

Sometimes the problem is much simpler:

Your CV is not explaining your value clearly enough.

This is especially common if you are trying to move on from the NHS, teaching, the armed forces, care, admin, or another structured role where your experience only really makes sense to people already inside that world.

You might have strong skills in:

Communication
Planning
Risk management
Safeguarding
Leadership
Training
Problem-solving
Documentation
Working under pressure
Supporting people through difficult situations

But if your CV reads like a list of duties, employers may miss the value completely.

Leaving the military does not mean starting from scratch.

It can feel strange trying to explain years of service to civilian employers, especially when so much of what you did was shaped by military language, structure and responsibility.

But your experience has value.

Leadership.
Discipline.
Planning.
Logistics.
Training others.
Risk management.
Working under pressure.
Handling responsibility.
Solving problems when things are not straightforward.

The issue is not that your experience is “too military.”

The issue is often that your CV has not translated it clearly enough for civilian employers.

A strong civilian CV should show what you actually bring to the table, without relying on jargon, acronyms or job titles that someone outside the forces may not fully understand.

You are not starting again.

You are repositioning.

It is supposed to explain your value.

And if you are trying to leave the NHS, teaching, care, admin, or a career that has worn you down, that matters even more.

Because employers outside your current sector might not automatically understand what you have handled.

They might not see the risk management.

The safeguarding.

The planning.

The communication.

The pressure.

The prioritising.

The problem-solving.

The calm you had to keep when everything around you was anything but calm.

That does not mean your experience is not transferable.

It means your CV needs to translate it properly.

You are not starting from scratch.

You just need your experience written in a way that makes sense to the people reading it.

2️⃣ Write down ONE thing you’d like more of in your next job.
Time. Pay. Boundaries. Support. Variety. Respect. Pick just one word and put it in your notes app.
3️⃣ Give yourself permission not to fix everything today.
