🔹 BEHIND POLISHED PATH: WHY I CREATED IT

Polished Path wasn’t created because I had always planned to work in career support.

It grew from my own experience of trying to leave an established profession after more than a decade in healthcare.

I knew I had valuable experience, but communicating that value outside the environment in which I had developed it was difficult.

Like many people considering a career change, I initially saw myself through my job title rather than through the skills, judgement and achievements behind it.

Once I successfully moved into a very different commercial career, I began to recognise how many capable people face the same problem.

They aren’t lacking experience.

They aren’t starting again.

They simply need help translating what they have already achieved into language that makes sense to a different employer.

That is why I created Polished Path.

I wanted to offer the kind of practical, personalised support that I understand from experience can make such a difference.

Not generic phrases copied into a template.

Not an attempt to make somebody sound like a completely different person.

Instead, I take the time to understand each person’s background, identify the value hidden within their experience and present it clearly, professionally and honestly.

Because sometimes the problem isn’t that you aren’t qualified for something different.

It’s that your CV hasn’t learned how to explain why you are yet.

🔹 BEHIND POLISHED PATH: MY CAREER-CHANGE STORY

After more than a decade working in healthcare, I reached a point where I knew I needed something different.

The problem was that I had spent so long building a career in one profession that I struggled to imagine where else my experience might be valued.

On paper, I could describe my responsibilities.

What I found much harder was explaining what those responsibilities demonstrated:

🔹 Communicating complex information clearly
🔹 Building trust with people from very different backgrounds
🔹 Managing competing priorities under pressure
🔹 Making difficult decisions and taking responsibility for them
🔹 Working independently while contributing to a wider team
🔹 Adapting quickly when circumstances changed

Those abilities were not limited to healthcare. They were valuable commercial skills too.

But recognising that and communicating it convincingly were two very different things.

Changing careers meant learning how to stop describing myself solely through my previous job title and start presenting the value behind my experience.

It wasn’t about pretending I had already done the new job.

It was about showing that I had the skills, judgement and potential to succeed in a different environment.

I eventually made that transition and built a successful career outside my original profession.

That experience now influences every career-change CV I work on through Polished Path.

I understand how daunting it feels to leave an established career, how easy it is to underestimate your own experience and how important it is to make employers see the relevance that you can already see.

That is the journey behind Polished Path.

👋 WHO IS ACTUALLY BEHIND POLISHED PATH?

A recent comment questioned what experience sits behind Polished Path and suggested that AI could provide the same support for free.

Although I didn’t agree with the assumptions being made, it did make me realise something:

I regularly talk about my clients, career change and the importance of presenting your experience properly, but I have never really explained who is behind Polished Path, why I created it or what qualifies me to offer this support.

I intentionally keep my name, photograph and principal career separate from this page. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know about the experience, values and motivation behind the service.

Polished Path was not created by somebody who has only ever offered career advice.

It was created by somebody who spent over a decade working in healthcare, built a successful clinical career and then navigated a significant transition into a very different commercial role.

I experienced first-hand how difficult it can be to recognise your own transferable skills, communicate your value outside your established profession and convince employers that your experience is relevant to a completely different environment.

That experience became the foundation of Polished Path.

You are not “too far into your career” to change direction.

That is one of the biggest fears I hear from people who are completely burned out in their current role.

Especially NHS staff.
Especially teachers.

Thirty applications.

Zero interviews.

So you tell yourself the answer is to apply for thirty more.

It might not be.

If the same CV keeps going out and nothing comes back, volume may not be the problem.

Positioning might be.

Your CV could be:

• Describing duties instead of proving impact
• Written for the career you have, not the one you want
• Burying transferable skills beneath sector-specific language
• Trying to appeal to everyone and convincing no one

None of that means you are not capable.

If I removed your job title from your CV, would an employer still understand how good you are?

For many people, the honest answer is no.

Not because they lack experience.

Because their CV is filled with duties:

“Responsible for…”

“Worked with…”

“Managed…”

That tells an employer what the role involved.

It does not tell them what you brought to it.

A strong CV shows the problems you solved, the pressure you handled, the improvements you made, the people you supported and the outcomes you helped deliver.

This matters even more when you are changing careers.

Recruiters outside your sector may not understand your acronyms, job bands or internal processes. They should not have to guess how your experience transfers.

Your job title is not your value.

But your CV needs to prove it.
