Zero interviews.

So you tell yourself the answer is to apply for thirty more.

It might not be.

If the same CV keeps going out and nothing comes back, volume may not be the problem.

Positioning might be.

Your CV could be:

• Describing duties instead of proving impact
• Written for the career you have, not the one you want
• Burying transferable skills beneath sector-specific language
• Trying to appeal to everyone and convincing no one

None of that means you are not capable.

It means the person reading has not been given a clear enough reason to picture you in the role.

You do not need to exhaust yourself proving how badly you want a change.

You need an application that helps the employer understand why you make sense for it.

If I removed your job title from your CV, would an employer still understand how good you are?

For many people, the honest answer is no.

Not because they lack experience.

Because their CV is filled with duties:

“Responsible for…”

“Worked with…”

“Managed…”

That tells an employer what the role involved.

It does not tell them what you brought to it.

A strong CV shows the problems you solved, the pressure you handled, the improvements you made, the people you supported and the outcomes you helped deliver.

This matters even more when you are changing careers.

Recruiters outside your sector may not understand your acronyms, job bands or internal processes. They should not have to guess how your experience transfers.

Your job title is not your value.

But your CV needs to prove it.

You might be scared that everything you have worked for will count for nothing.

It won’t.

The years you have spent managing pressure, solving problems, supporting people, handling difficult conversations and keeping things moving have built skills that other employers need.

But if your CV only lists duties, job titles and sector-specific language, they may never recognise them.

You do not need to know your dream job before you leave the one making you miserable.

This is where so many people get stuck.

They believe they need a perfect five-year plan, a brand-new qualification and absolute certainty before they can even consider changing careers.

So they stay.

Not because they want to, but because the unknown feels more frightening than the job already draining them.

A career change can begin much more simply:

Understanding what you no longer want.

Recognising the valuable skills you already have.

Finding out where those skills could take you.

Then building a CV that helps employers see you as more than your current job title.

This morning, someone will sit in their car outside work for five extra minutes, trying to convince themselves to go in.

Not because they’re lazy.

Not because they lack resilience.

Because they’ve spent so long holding together a job that is slowly pulling them apart.

If the best part of your working week is that it’s finally over, please read this.

It’s Friday.

Maybe you’ve spent all week telling yourself:

“I just need to get through today.”

Then Monday comes around and you start the whole thing again.

You’re exhausted.

Not necessarily because you hate your profession.

Maybe you used to love it.

But somewhere between the impossible workload, constant pressure, lack of recognition and giving far more of yourself than you’re getting back…

something changed.

And now you’re starting to wonder:

“What else could I actually do?”

That question comes up constantly in conversations I have with NHS staff, teachers and other burned-out professionals.

And the answer is rarely:

“Nothing.”

The problem is that when you’ve spent 10, 15 or 20 years in one profession, your CV usually describes you as that profession.

It doesn’t show an employer everything underneath the job title.

The leadership.

The judgement.

The organisation.

The resilience.

The communication.

The years of experience that absolutely DO have value somewhere else.

You don’t need to throw your entire career away and start again from the bottom.

You need to understand what you’ve built…

and learn how to sell it somewhere new.

You are allowed to want something different.

Even if you used to love your job.

Even if you’ve spent years training for it.

Even if other people don’t understand why you’d leave.

Your career belongs to you.

One of the biggest lies burned-out professionals tell themselves is this…

“I’m only qualified to do what I’m doing now.”

No.

You’re qualified for far more than your job title suggests.

A nurse doesn’t just administer medication.

They lead under pressure.
Manage conflict.
Prioritise competing demands.
Communicate with distressed people.
Make life-changing decisions.

A teacher doesn’t just teach.

They manage projects.
Present to groups.
Coach people.
Analyse data.
Build relationships.
Solve problems every single day.

A physio doesn’t just rehabilitate patients.

They negotiate.
Educate.
Motivate.
Plan.
Lead.
Influence.

The problem isn’t that you don’t have transferable skills.

It’s that nobody has ever shown you how to translate them onto a CV.

I’ve lost count of the number of people who’ve told me…

“I don’t know what else I can do.”

A few weeks later they’re applying for jobs they never thought they were capable of.

Sometimes all it takes is someone helping you see your experience differently.

Your career isn’t over.

It’s one of the biggest myths people tell themselves when they’re feeling burned out.

The NHS doesn’t just teach clinical skills.

Teaching doesn’t just teach lesson planning.

The armed forces don’t just teach military skills.

Every career builds things that employers value:

✔️ Leadership
✔️ Communication
✔️ Organisation
✔️ Decision-making
✔️ Resilience
✔️ Working under pressure
✔️ Building relationships
✔️ Solving problems

The challenge isn’t that you don’t have transferable skills.

The challenge is recognising them and presenting them in a way that makes employers outside your current profession stop and take notice.

You probably have more options than you realise.

Sometimes, you just need someone to help you see them.
