"George the Sixth by the grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India".

This is the translation of the legend on the obverse of the 5 pound 1937. While accurate in 1937, this list of titles and honours would be out of date by the end of George's reign. Between this inscription and the youthful portrait, created in the aftermath of the abdication and George's unexpected elevation, the 1937 5 Pounds represents an ephemeral moment in modern British history.

The coin pictured will be offered in our Numismatic auction on 26 September 2022. DM us for more details or register on our website - link in profile.
