Same information. Same opportunity. Same moment in history.

In 2008, as the global economy collapsed, governments everywhere looked for a way out.

Green technology was a strategic bet.

But as budget deficits grew, the US and Europe lost their nerve (and interest).

They chose austerity instead.

China on the other hand doubled down.

They've invested trillions and built a clean tech manufacturing base from the ground up.

Today, China accounts for around 70% of global manufacturing across the six core clean technologies.

It would be an understatement to say it worked.

Yet the outcome was available to everyone.

The difference was conviction.

The willingness to hold a long term position under short term pressure.

To think in decades when everyone around you is thinking in quarters.

The leaders who create the most value, for their organisations, their teams and their own lives, are rarely the most talented in the room.

They're the ones who decide what matters.

And don't abandon it when it gets hard

“I think I’m just bad at beach holidays.”

My client just got back from a luxury resort in the Caribbean.

“I felt bored.
And I came home drained and anxious.”

He can sit by the pool for a day.
Have a margarita at lunch.

But after that?
It starts to feel like he’s wasting his time.

Everyone else was drinking, eating, escaping, numbing out.

And something about it didn’t sit right.

What he actually wants from time off is different.

Peace.
Connection.
Nature.

Not numbing.
Not consumption.
Not escapism.

Boredom isn’t always boredom.
Sometimes it’s misalignment.
A signal that something doesn’t fit.

What is it you actually want instead?

The weight isn’t just the re-org. Or the redundancy rollout. Or the revenue loss.

It’s the marriage that’s quietly falling apart.
The intimacy that’s broken down.
It’s the shame and self loathing you’ve carried for years.

It’s the grief you’re managing between back-to-back meetings.
The cancer battle of someone you love.
The alcohol addiction you’re petrified of labelling.

This week a client said to me:

“There are moments when I just love you.”

Whatever is happening, however tangled, tender or impossible it feels,

there is somewhere to bring it.

PS: I don’t do fixing. And I definitely don’t do pity.

Four years ago, we were sitting on a bus in London and I asked my husband:

“If anything was possible, what would you choose?”

What came next changed everything.
Not the answer. The decisions.

The real part that people don’t talk about.

Leaving the things that were working
(childcare, loved ones, london network while growing a business)

Letting go of what looked good on paper
(beautiful home, london salaries, excellent schools)

And the constant negotiation with reality.

“Maybe this is enough.”
“Maybe this is just how life is.”
“Maybe I should be grateful for what I have.”

Building a different life isn’t complicated.

But it does require something most people avoid.

BEING HONEST ABOUT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY WANT.

And then making decisions to match.

“I know you won’t take this the wrong way.”

He paused before saying:

“But there are moments when we work together where I just love you.”

Earlier, he’d been talking for a while, trying to explain what was going on.

At the end, he said:

“Sorry, I know this is complicated.”

I looked at him and said:

“It’s not complicated.”

We both laughed.

That was the moment he was talking about.

Most of what people call complicated…

Isn’t.

It’s just not clear yet.

My husband and I just got back to our home in the Algarve after four months away.

Japan. London. Paris. Vietnam.

Onsens in the mountains.
Christmas with family.
Morning cycles, yoga studio in a rice paddie and a co-working space with ice baths and massages onsite.

This is our normal now.

But it didn’t start here.

It started on a bus in London, four years ago.
We were sat next to each other with our two-year-old son.

And I asked him a question:

“If anything was possible… what would you choose?”
“No limitations. What would life actually look like?”

He paused.

“I’d spend three months a year training.
In the mountains. Running, trekking, cold water therapy, being in nature.

And I’d live the rest of the time somewhere warm.
By the sea.
Peaceful. Light. Easy.”

And then came the part most people stop at:

“How?”

How would we do it?
What would it even look like?
Where would we start?

For him, it felt impossible.

For me, it didn’t.

Because I’d already changed so much in my life. My body. My career. My relationships.

And I knew something he couldn't see yet.

Everything starts with clarity.

Not what feels realistic or what makes sense.

But what you actually want.

You don’t build a different life by thinking in the same way.

She was right.

She knew exactly what she wanted to say.

She'd seen it within minutes.

Where it would break. What it would cost. How it would play out six months from now.

She knew she was right.
And still…

She hesitated.

No one in the room would have noticed. But she felt it. That split second where her brain ran the calculation:

Will this land badly? Am I being too much? Will people think I’m negative?

So she softened it. And added a qualifier.

Turned "This won't work."

Into "I wonder if there's something we might want to consider…"

Polite. Reasonable. Easy to agree with.
Easy to ignore.

This is how it happens.

Dozens of small edits. Until the pattern becomes your reputation.

Polite. Reasonable. Easy to agree with.
Easy to ignore.

People can feel when you're holding something back.

The work is learning to trust what you already know.

That's the leader people actually follow.

I’m at a crossroads, she said. Or maybe I’m in a crisis.

‘I feel alone and untethered, it’s like I’m swimming against a current and losing myself and everything I’ve built. I feel emotional even talking about it.’

What she wanted was clarity.

And validation from the inside.

When we talked about the investment, she hesitated.

“It’s a yes and a no.”
“I want it.”

“But I need to know I can’t get the same result on my own.”

You can keep trying to figure this out on your own. Keep telling yourself it makes sense to save money.

But if you could solve this alone, you already would have.

This moment isn’t asking for more proving. It’s asking you to outgrow the version of you who believes she has to.

This is about when you decide
you're done doing it alone.

“Why doesn’t it feel like enough? Why don’t I feel happy?”

She’d just made SVP. The announcement had gone out. The congratulations were flooding in.

When you're driven by the need to prove yourself,

your worth starts to feel like it’s always on the line.

And when it is,

there’s always something more to prove.

Most people don’t realise

that this is what’s driving them.

PEOPLE WON'T LIKE YOU.

So don't stand out. Don't disagree. Don't be honest. And definitely don't be difficult.

Don't ask another question.
Don't name what is clearly happening. Don't push back on decisions made by the male-only board.

People won't like it.
And they won't like you.

But what if it stops being about whether other people like you.
Or approve of you.

And becomes about whether you're leading with conviction.

At some point it has to stop being about them.

Because you’re the one leading.
