The inner workings of our national defence and the impact of Whitehall bureaucracy have just been dragged into the spotlight, sparking a massive national conversation! ๐ฌ๐ง๐ก๏ธ
During a recent appearance before a House of Lords committee, former chief adviser Dominic Cummings delivered a blistering assessment of the real challenges facing the nation's military. When discussing the biggest threats to Britain's Special Forces, his answer wasn't China, Russia, or Iranโit was the country's own internal system.
Speaking directly to the committee, Cummings bluntly stated: "Putin is a tiny problem relative to our own Ministry of Defence and the lawyers in the Cabinet Office". He further argued that it isn't foreign adversaries launching "lawfare" against the SAS or destroying the MoD's procurement processes, but rather the government's own bureaucracy and civil servants.
For many serving in defence and countless frustrated taxpayers, these explosive comments finally say what people have secretly known for years. There is a growing belief that while our operators are on the front lines learning vital modern drone warfare, internal politics and budget-protecting civil servants are actively blocking that progress from coming home. It fuels a tragic narrative for many: our enemies aren't beating us; we are beating ourselves from within.
It brings to mind the famous words of the late Fred Dibnah, which feel more relevant today than ever: "This country was built by men in overalls and ruined by men in suits."
Do you agree that bureaucracy and "men in suits" are holding the country's defence and true progress back? ๐๏ธ๐ฌ
