You do not have to sell your mum's house to pay for a care home, and most families are never told.
In the panic of a parent going into care, families rush to put the house on the market. But by law, when your mum moves in permanently, the council must ignore the value of her home for the first 12 weeks. After that, they must offer a deferred payment agreement, so the fees can be settled from her estate later and the home does not have to be sold in her lifetime. It is a legal right under the Care Act. Yet families still sell in a hurry, often for less than it is worth, when they never had to. Share this with anyone facing this decision.

Ask your mum where she wants to die. Then write it down. It could change everything.
It is a hard conversation, but one of the most loving you can have. Most people say they want to spend their final days at home. Yet the most common place people die is hospital. Here is the part that matters: when someone's wish to die at home is written down in their records, they are around six times more likely to get it, and only about one in ten people have it recorded. So have the conversation, write it down, and tell the GP. Share this with someone who needs the reminder to ask.

Some families hid a camera in their mum's care home room. What they found ended up in court.
Across the country, families who sensed something was wrong have secretly filmed a parent's room. More than once, the footage, carers rough with a frightened, vulnerable person, has led to convictions. Even the regulator now admits hidden cameras have exposed real abuse. It is a legal grey area, tangled up with privacy and consent, and it should never have to come to this. But the fact that families feel they have to do it tells you how much trust has broken down. If your gut ever says something is wrong, do not ignore it. Share this with anyone worried about a loved one in care.

Your mum could be owed more than £5,000 a year, and nobody tells her to claim it.
It is called Attendance Allowance. If she is over pension age and needs help or supervision because of a health condition, physical or mental, she can get it. It is not means tested, so it does not matter how much she has in savings or that she owns her home. It pays up to around £115 a week. Yet over £5 billion goes unclaimed every year, simply because people assume they earn too much or have never heard of it.
If you know someone with an older parent, share this with them. It could put thousands back in a family's pocket.

We treat loneliness like it is just a bit sad. It is not. The research shows loneliness raises your risk of dying by around a quarter, about the same harm as smoking 15 ci******es a day. And here is what people get wrong: putting your mum in a building full of other people does not cure loneliness. You can be surrounded by strangers and still completely alone. What actually helps is real connection, someone who knows her, talks to her, remembers her stories. That is the whole point of one to one care at home. Company is not a luxury at the end of life, it is medicine. Tag someone who needs to hear this.

Medication safety in care homes deserves more attention. A landmark UK study found that on any given day, around seven in ten care home residents had been affected by at least one medication error, spanning prescribing, dispensing and administration. For families, the takeaway is simple: you are entitled to ask exactly what a relative is taking and how it is checked. For providers, it is a reminder of how much safe medicines management depends on adequate staffing and time.

Dementia and council tax in England, the refund nobody tells you about. If your mum has dementia, or another condition that severely affects her, she can be disregarded for council tax. That is 100% off if she lives alone, or 25% off otherwise, and many councils will backdate it. Families have had refunds of ten to fifteen thousand pounds. All it takes is a GP certificate and a qualifying benefit. Have you claimed it? Tell me below. Follow for the truth about care.

They were married 60 years. Then care split them up. When one partner needs more care than the other, families across England are told the only option is a care home for one, leaving the other at home alone. Britain's most senior family judge called separating elderly couples like this simply inhumane, warning people can die of a broken heart. There is another way. Live-in care and home care let couples stay together, in their own home, under the same roof. Nobody should have to say goodbye while they are both still alive. Have you seen this happen to a family you know? Tell me below, and share this so more families know their options.
