Niwa House, designed by Takero Shimazaki Architects, was recently named ‘Private Housing Project of the Year’ at the Structural Timber Awards.

Drawing on Japanese architectural principles, this purpose-built house in East Dulwich features an exposed timber frame reminiscent of Torii gates, creating a striking play of light and shadow. The layered timber design seamlessly transitions from interior to exterior, with an Accoya frame that wraps around the house. This design blurs the boundary between the garden and living areas, embodying the Japanese concept of engawa, a space that softens the division between indoors and outdoors.

Designed by Gianni Botsford Architects, this award-winning copper-clad pavilion, tucked away in the back garden of a grand 1840s villa, is a truly unique project. It involved demolishing a dilapidated 1960s bungalow and replacing it with a predominantly subterranean house.

Above ground, the design features a sleek, single-story structure, while below, two basement levels are surrounded by gardens, light wells, and skylights that flood the interior with natural light. Despite being enclosed by neighbouring houses on three sides, the home expertly captures and distributes varying intensities of light, mirroring the rhythms of daily life.

Recently featured in the and in the July/August edition of , the Reciprocal House, designed by , replaces the original Victorian Coach House with a four-story structure that reciprocally responds to its Norman Foster-designed extension.

Exposed in-situ concrete and the extensive use of aluminium throughout creates an atmosphere of calmness, where stillness and peace gently permeate every corner.

WE ARE HIRING - Project Coordinator to join our team in north London.

This is the perfect opportunity for an experienced project coordinator or architect looking for a change.
New Wave London is a privately owned and growing construction company with over 25 years’ experience in the industry. We work with some of the UK’s leading architects and interior designers.

The successful candidate will join the team in the north-west London office. Position requirements:

EXPERIENCE – delivery experience in project management or as a project architect/contract administrator on high-end construction projects

COMMUNICATION – ability to liaise with clients, architects/designers, sub-contractors, suppliers and colleagues both in person, email and telephone

TASK MANAGEMENT – ability to manage multiple projects and project deadlines

PROGRAMMING + SEQUENCING – ability to produce programs of work and have a good understanding of sequencing of work

ADMIN – good organisation skills and ability to keep project administration up to date

APTITUDE – ability to problem solve, use initiative and understand details is essential. An interest in construction and contemporary architecture is important.

IT – good knowledge of Microsoft Office package. Knowledge of programming software is also beneficial
