On-board with I.T. Designer of an outstanding collection of applied games carefully crafted to support the IT domain. This also serves to deliver a high degree of replay value.

Change, be it in new terminology, concepts, organisation or processes can be extremely challenging. Games provide an additional mechanism for the change manager, providing the informative content whilst being entertaining and interactive. Participants are able to experiment with different strategies and tactics without any risk to the company. Our serious games comprise a business development goal

, requiring careful management of resources, money and time. Each game presents these challenges with a different scenario designed to focus attention on a specific aspect of IT. The game experience is not a simple, straight-forward simulation, rather a dramatisation of the subject matter adding context and a holistic perspective. At its core, the game-play is designed to teach and reinforce understanding of terminology and processes through associative learning techniques. Corporate culture and goals are incorporated within the reward and scoring structure of the games and can be adjusted to fit your company as can the graphic content, where colour schemes, logo-types, images and iconography can be modified to establish your corporate identity within the game. Most games have a number of variants to accommodate time constraints, audience and focus areas. Full supporting materials are included allowing you to get the most out of the game experience.

The three games currently produced form a coherent story that views IT from three different perspectives. UPGRADE! looks at thing from the business point of view, striving to use the available technology to maximise the delivered value. Stabil-IT takes the standpoint of enabling the business with IT continuing to improve the offering whilst securing the stability of the solutions. The third perspective is provided by DEPLOY! and looks at ensuring that the IT is optimised and ultimately minimising the cost to the business.

The last year has seen some major leaps forward in the games designs. All three of the primary games have been updated; UPGRADE!, DEPLOY! and Stabil-IT. Stabil-IT is the one that has received most focus with the inclusion of DevOps and Agile modes of play. It is still undergoing a major improvement activity.

The initial design is finished on the new game which I have called "DELIVER IT!" at least for now. I've sent it for production so should have the prototype ready for play testing in a couple of weeks.

I have started developing a new game which will be in the project management domain. I am aiming at a light-weight card-driven game with a play time around 30 minutes. The target date for the prototype is the end of August 2015.

Guest post by Clark Quinn () One of the hottest topics around right now is gamification, and as with any hot topic, just as there’re reasons to be excited, so too are there reasons to be wary. I suggest there is an important distinction between serious games and gamification, and the fo…

Yesterday was the Gaminomics event in London - and what an event! A very diverse group all looking at how gamification can help across the board; health research, journalism, business, education and etc. We had a couple of tables to showcase DEPLOY!. Stabi-IT and UPGRADE! set up in the social area.

I have been modifying the player experience in UPGRADE! by moving from a single player board, containing all the service areas, to separate large Hex tiles (see below) used in conjunction with a couple of small square player boards and lots of wooden pieces. The new design allows more variation in the set-up and game-play and also focuses everything on what is now the business area hex (connections, service definition, chosen solution, commitments and workload). The new tiles for are currently on their way from The Game Crafter and I hope to receive them early next week in time for the next after-work session!
I am still investigating adding the integration onto the hexes as well but haven't decided on whether to use card tokens or not.
