๐ŸŒŠโš“ INTRODUCING: BUILT FOR OFFSHORE โš“๐ŸŒŠ

20 DAYS. 20 VESSELS. ONE EXTRAORDINARY INDUSTRY.

Following our Giants of Global Trade series, we're heading offshore.

Far beyond the coastline, some of the most specialised vessels ever engineered are working around the clock.

They install wind turbines.
They lay pipelines and subsea cables.
They drill kilometres beneath the seabed.
They lift structures weighing thousands of tonnes.
They support divers, ROVs and subsea construction teams.
They transport equipment, maintain offshore installations and keep crews connected with some of the most remote workplaces on Earth.

Over the next 20 days, RAW Resourcing will showcase some of the remarkable vessels Built for Offshore โ€” from powerful anchor handlers and advanced construction vessels to cable layers, drillships, heavy-lift vessels and the new generation of ships transforming offshore wind.

We'll look at what they do, how they work, where they were built and the engineering that makes them possible.

Because behind every vessel is something even more important:
People.
Naval architects. Shipbuilders. Marine engineers. Project managers. Superintendents. Technicians. Seafarers. Offshore crews.

People build ships. People keep them moving. People move the world. ๐ŸŒ

Tomorrow โ€” Built for Offshore: Day 01.

๐Ÿ“ฆ๐Ÿšข HMM ALGECIRAS โ€” THE 24,000 TEU GIANT

Weโ€™ve reached the final vessel in our Giants of Global Trade series โ€” and weโ€™re finishing with one of the ships that helped usher container shipping into the 24,000 TEU era.

โš“ Operator: HMM
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Built by: Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering โ€” now Hanwha Ocean
๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Built in: Geoje, South Korea
๐Ÿ“… Delivered: 2020
๐Ÿ“ Length: 399.9 metres
โ†”๏ธ Beam: 61 metres
๐Ÿ“ฆ Capacity: 23,964 TEU
๐Ÿšข Type: Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV)

When HMM Algeciras was delivered in 2020, she entered service as the worldโ€™s largest container ship by nominal TEU capacity.

At almost 400 metres long, she is longer than many of the world's tallest skyscrapers are high.

Her deck can accommodate 24 rows of containers across, while her enormous capacity means that a single voyage can move almost 24,000 twenty-foot containers.

HMM Algeciras was the first of a series of twelve 24,000-class container ships ordered by HMM from South Korean shipbuilders โ€” vessels designed around enormous economies of scale and improved energy efficiency.

And she represents just how rapidly container shipping has evolved.

Twenty years earlier, a 10,000 TEU ship was enormous.

Today, the industry operates vessels capable of carrying well over 24,000 TEU.

More cargo.
Greater efficiency.
Extraordinary engineering. ๐ŸŒ

And that brings our 20-day Giants of Global Trade series to an end.

Twenty vessels. Twenty examples of what the global maritime industry is capable of.

Behind every one are the shipbuilders, naval architects, engineers, seafarers, superintendents, project managers, planners and thousands of other maritime professionals who make it possible.

People build ships. People keep them moving. People move the world. ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ—๏ธ๐Ÿšข THIALF โ€” THE OFFSHORE WORKHORSE

Day 19 takes us offshore with Thialf โ€” Heerema Marine Contractorsโ€™ legendary semi-submersible crane vessel.

โš“ Operator: Heerema Marine Contractors
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Built by: Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Built in: Tomano, Japan
๐Ÿ“… Built: 1985
๐Ÿ“ Length: 201.6 metres

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Cranes: 2 ร— 7,100 tonnes
๐Ÿ’ช Tandem Lift Capacity: 14,200 tonnes
๐Ÿ‘ท Accommodation: 736 people
๐Ÿšข Type: Semi-Submersible Crane Vessel (SSCV)

Two enormous cranes. A combined lifting capacity of 14,200 tonnes. Nearly four decades of offshore operations.

Before the arrival of Sleipnir, Thialf was the worldโ€™s largest semi-submersible crane vessel.

Her twin cranes can each lift 7,100 tonnes, allowing Thialf to handle enormous offshore structures including topsides, jackets, foundations and other heavy modules.

In 2000, she set a world record by lifting the 11,883-tonne Shearwater topside in the North Sea.

And almost four decades after entering service, Thialf is still working.

Today, she is also playing a major role in offshore wind, installing monopiles, transition pieces and offshore substations. In 2026, Heerema deployed her to install 100 wind turbine foundations for the Baล‚tyk 2 & 3 projects in the Baltic Sea.

Built in 1985.
Still lifting giants in 2026.
That is serious engineering. ๐ŸŒ

Behind Thialf are crane operators, marine engineers, riggers, naval architects, project managers, superintendents and offshore crews.

People build ships. People keep them moving. People move the world. ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ“ฆ๐Ÿšข Mร†RSK Mc-KINNEY Mร˜LLER โ€” THE SHIP THAT CHANGED CONTAINER SHIPPING

Day 18 takes us to one of the most influential container ships of the modern era โ€” Mรฆrsk Mc-Kinney Mรธller, the first of Maerskโ€™s revolutionary Triple-E class.

โš“ Operator: Maersk Line
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Built by: Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering โ€” now Hanwha Ocean
๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Built in: Okpo, Geoje, South Korea
๐Ÿ“… Delivered: 2013
๐Ÿ“ Length: 399 metres
โ†”๏ธ Beam: 59 metres
๐Ÿ“ฆ Original Capacity: 18,270 TEU
๐Ÿšข Type: Triple-E Container Ship

When she arrived in 2013, she was the largest container ship in the world.

But the Triple-E project wasn't simply about building a bigger vessel.

The name represented three design principles:
Economy of scale.
Energy efficiency.
Environmental improvement.

Her enormous hull was designed to carry more containers while reducing fuel consumption per container transported.

At almost 400 metres long, the vessel helped establish the dimensions that would become familiar among today's generation of ultra-large container ships.

She was also designed with twin engines and twin propellers, helping optimise propulsion efficiency for the slower operating speeds used on long-distance container routes.

The ships that followed would become even larger โ€” eventually breaking through the 20,000 and then 24,000 TEU barriers.

But Mรฆrsk Mc-Kinney Mรธller helped redefine what a modern container ship could be.

A new generation of ship.
A new scale of container shipping.
A design that helped shape the giants that followed. ๐ŸŒ

Behind vessels like this are shipbuilders, naval architects, marine engineers, seafarers, superintendents, planners and logistics professionals.

People build ships. People keep them moving. People move the world. ๐ŸŒ

โ„๏ธ๐Ÿšข AL ZUBARAH โ€” THE LNG GIANT

Day 17 takes us into the world of LNG shipping with Al Zubarah, one of the enormous Q-Max LNG carriers developed to transport natural gas from Qatar to markets around the world.

โš“ Operator: QatarGas
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Built by: Hyundai Heavy Industries
๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Built in: Ulsan, South Korea
๐Ÿ“… Delivered: 2014
๐Ÿ“ Length: ~345 metres
โ†”๏ธ Beam: ~54 metres
โ„๏ธ LNG Capacity: ~266,000 mยณ
๐Ÿšข Type: Q-Max LNG Carrier

The โ€œQโ€ stands for Qatar. The โ€œMaxโ€ means maximum.

Q-Max vessels were designed around the largest ship dimensions capable of loading at Qatarโ€™s LNG terminals.

Their enormous tanks can carry approximately 266,000 cubic metres of LNG, with the natural gas cooled to around -162ยฐC so it becomes liquid and occupies a fraction of its gaseous volume.

These ships also use onboard reliquefaction systems, allowing boil-off gas from the cargo to be converted back into LNG rather than simply being lost.

At around 345 metres long, Al Zubarah demonstrates the extraordinary engineering required to transport cryogenic cargo safely across thousands of miles of ocean.

Natural gas.
Cooled to -162ยฐC.
Transported across oceans.
Delivered on a gigantic scale. ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ“ฆ Capacity: 24,188 TEU
โš–๏ธ Deadweight: ~228,000 tonnes
๐Ÿšข Type: Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV)

24,188 containers. One enormous ship.

At almost 400 metres long, OOCL Spain is roughly the length of four football pitches placed end-to-end.

When she entered service in 2023, she became OOCL's first vessel to exceed 24,000 TEU.

Her enormous deck can carry containers stacked high above the waterline, while thousands more are carried within the cargo holds below.

But vessels of this scale aren't simply about getting bigger.
OOCL Spain incorporates modern technology designed to improve operational efficiency, including smart systems for navigation optimisation, fuel monitoring and machinery management.

The result is an extraordinary piece of marine engineering capable of moving a significant amount of global cargo in a single voyage.

One vessel.
Thousands of containers.
Millions of products.
Countless supply chains. ๐ŸŒ

And behind every voyage is an enormous network of shipbuilders, marine engineers, naval architects, seafarers, port operators, planners, superintendents and logistics professionals.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ๐Ÿšข BLUE MARLIN โ€” THE SHIP THAT CARRIES GIANTS

Day 15 takes us into the world of heavy transport shipping with Blue Marlin โ€” a semi-submersible vessel designed to carry cargo that looks almost too large to move.

โš“ Operator: Boskalis
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Built by: CSBC Corporation
๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ Built in: Taiwan
๐Ÿ“… Delivered: 2000
๐Ÿ“ Length: 224.8 metres
โ†”๏ธ Beam: 63 metres
โš–๏ธ Deadweight: ~76,000 tonnes
๐Ÿšข Type: Semi-Submersible Heavy Transport Vessel

When the cargo is too big for a conventional ship, you bring the ship underneath the cargo.

Blue Marlin can ballast down, partially submerging its enormous open deck beneath the water.

Floating cargo can then be positioned above the deck before the vessel pumps out its ballast tanks, rises from the water and literally lifts the cargo aboard.

And the loads can be extraordinary.

Blue Marlin has transported offshore platforms, drilling rigs, naval vessels and other enormous structures across oceans.

One of her most famous missions came in 2000, when she transported the damaged USS Cole from Yemen back to the United States following the attack on the destroyer.

She later became famous for carrying huge offshore structures including the Thunder Horse production platform hull.

It is an extraordinary concept:

Sink the deck.
Float the cargo aboard.
Raise the ship.
Carry the impossible across the ocean. ๐ŸŒ

Behind heavy transport operations are marine engineers, ballast engineers, naval architects, project managers, deck crews, riggers, superintendents and specialist heavy-lift professionals.

๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšข Hร–EGH AURORA โ€” THE CAR CARRIER OF THE FUTURE

Day 14 takes us into the world of vehicle transportation with Hรถegh Aurora โ€” the first of Hรถegh Autolinersโ€™ next-generation Aurora-class PCTCs.

โš“ Operator: Hรถegh Autoliners
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Built by: China Merchants Heavy Industry

โš–๏ธ Deadweight: 25,200 tonnes
๐Ÿšข Type: Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC)
9,100 vehicles. One ship.

Hรถegh Aurora was designed to move cars, trucks and other rolling cargo around the world on an enormous scale.

But what makes her especially interesting is the technology behind the size.

The Aurora class incorporates around 1,500 mยฒ of solar panels, is shore-power ready, and carries both ammonia-ready and methanol-ready class notations.

The vessels were also designed with stronger decks and improved internal ramp systems, giving them the flexibility to carry a wider range of cargo.

Hรถegh Autoliners has committed to a major Aurora-class newbuilding programme, with these ships forming a central part of its fleet renewal and decarbonisation strategy.

A floating multi-storey car park โ€” engineered for global trade.

Behind vessels like Hรถegh Aurora are shipbuilders, naval architects, marine engineers, electricians, project managers, logistics teams, seafarers and thousands of automotive supply-chain professionals.

๐Ÿ›ณ๏ธ๐ŸŒŠ ICON OF THE SEAS โ€” THE ULTIMATE FLOATING CITY

Day 13 takes us aboard one of the most extraordinary passenger ships ever constructed โ€” Icon of the Seas.

Built by Meyer Turku in Finland for Royal Caribbean International, she represents modern cruise shipbuilding on an enormous scale.

โš“ Operator: Royal Caribbean International
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Built by: Meyer Turku

๐Ÿ‘ท Crew: 2,350
๐Ÿšข Type: Icon-class Cruise Ship

365 metres long. 20 decks. More than 5,600 guests.

Icon of the Seas is less like a conventional cruise ship and more like a small city engineered to travel across the ocean.

The ship features eight neighbourhoods, seven swimming pools, nine whirlpools and Category 6 โ€” a huge onboard waterpark with six waterslides.

But what passengers see is only half the story.

Behind it all are vast propulsion, electrical, HVAC, freshwater, waste management, fire protection, navigation and automation systems โ€” all operating continuously while carrying thousands of people across the ocean.

Icon also became Royal Caribbean's first LNG-powered cruise ship and incorporates technologies including fuel cells, shore-power capability and waste-heat recovery.

She was delivered in November 2023 and entered passenger service in January 2024.

A hotel.
A waterpark.
An entertainment complex.
A power plant.
A ship.

All engineered into one enormous floating city. ๐ŸŒ

Behind her are thousands of shipbuilders, engineers, naval architects, welders, electricians, outfitters, project managers and marine professionals.

โ„๏ธ๐Ÿญ PRELUDE FLNG โ€” THE FLOATING LNG FACTORY

Day 12 takes us to one of the most extraordinary offshore facilities ever constructed โ€” Prelude FLNG.

This isnโ€™t simply a vessel.

It is effectively an entire LNG processing plant floating at sea.

โš“ Operator: Shell
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Built by: Technipโ€“Samsung Consortium
๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Built at: Samsung Heavy Industries, Geoje, South Korea
๐Ÿ“… Delivered: 2017

โš–๏ธ Fully Laden Weight: More than 600,000 tonnes
โ„๏ธ LNG Production: 3.6 million tonnes per year
๐Ÿญ Type: Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Facility (FLNG)

At 488 metres long, Prelude is longer than four football pitches laid end-to-end.

But its size is only part of the story.

Prelude was designed to extract natural gas from offshore fields, process it, cool it to approximately -162ยฐC, store the resulting LNG onboard and transfer it directly to LNG carriers at sea.

That means many of the operations traditionally carried out at a huge land-based LNG terminal can instead happen hundreds of kilometres offshore.

The engineering behind it is staggering.

More than 260,000 tonnes of steel were used in the facility, alongside approximately 3,000 kilometres of electrical and instrumentation cabling.

Prelude was constructed in South Korea before being towed almost 6,000 kilometres to Australian waters, where it was permanently moored at the Prelude gas field.

The facility was engineered to remain moored there for at least 25 years.

Projects of this scale only exist because of enormous teams of naval architects, process engineers, marine engineers, structural engineers, fabricators, welders, commissioning specialists, project managers and offshore personnel.

People build ships. People keep them moving. People move the world. ๐ŸŒ
