You’ve got to love an AI image 🤣🤣

But seriously

Here’s the scary 😱😱 truth: most business owners are winging it when it comes to exiting.

And the numbers back that up hard.

Since the start of the year - I have heard of nearly 100 salons and barber shops who have shut up shop with no exit plan - and that’s just the ones I’ve heard of.

The headline stats (UK-focused)

* 48% of business owners have NO exit strategy

* Only ~9% have a fully integrated succession/exit plan

* Around 80% of SMEs fail to sell when they try to exit

* Roughly 80% of owners are unable to sell their business at all

Let that sink in:

👉 Half haven’t planned
👉 Most who try… fail

That’s not a strategy. That’s hope.🤞🏼



What that actually means (this is the part people avoid)

1. Most businesses aren’t built to be sold

Owners think:

“I’ll sell it one day”

Reality:

* No systems
* Owner-dependent
* No clean financials
* No management layer

That’s not a business. That’s a job with overheads.

2. Exit is usually reactive, not strategic

* 61% of owners have thought about exiting
* But only a tiny % have structured it

Translation:

They think about escape… but don’t build for it.

3. There’s a ticking time bomb (especially in the UK) and especially with salons.

* Huge number of business owners are ageing with no succession plan.

* Many are sole directors with no backup

Meaning:

Businesses don’t get sold… they quietly die. 🪦

4. The biggest risk no one talks about

Your business is likely:

* 60–80% of your net worth

❌ No exit plan = no retirement plan.

The truth no one realises until it’s too late (but you need to hear it)

Most business owners:

* Build income
* Not value
* Not assets
* Not something transferable

So when they stop…the money stops.

The opportunity (this is where you get ahead)

If you actually build with exit in mind, you’re in the minority immediately.

That means:

* You can sell when others can’t
* You can step back when others are trapped
* You can command a premium

Because buyers don’t buy salons…
They buy systems, teams, and predictable profit.

Straight question for you (and don’t dodge it)

If you disappeared for 3 months:

* Would your business still run and be there when you get back?
* Would the revenue hold?
* Could someone buy it tomorrow?

If the answer isn’t a solid yes…

You don’t have a business yet.
You’ve got a job.

I got asked this today by a salon owner who’d previously invested in support with someone else.

Fair question.

Because not all “business support” is the same.

Some give you ideas.
Some give you templates.
Some give you a nice plan that sits in a folder.

That’s not what I do.

I work side by side with you.

Like a sat nav…
—but one that actually tells you when you’re about to drive straight into a wall 😏

I work with salon owners who are already doing “okay”…

More profit.

𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀?.... 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗮𝘆.

Are you busy doing the do?

I know as a salon owner, you’re wearing every hat going…
and spinning more plates than you can keep up with.

And all you want?

Is a minute to breathe.

I remember the early days of running my salon.

I’d walk in… coat still on…

and it would start.

“Michelle, can you just—”
“Michelle, what do we do about—”
“Michelle, have you got a sec—”

I hadn’t even put my bag down.

I knew I needed help.

But I told myself what most salon owners tell themselves:

“It’s quicker and easier if I just do it myself.”

So I stayed in EVERYTHING.

Every decision. Every problem. Every little thing.

I thought I was being productive.

I wasn’t.
I was stuck.

Then something shifted.
Not overnight. Not magically.

But slowly… as I started to step back, train properly, put systems in…

One day I noticed......

I wasn’t needed.

And I’ll be honest — that messed with me quite a bit.

Because there’s a part of you that wants to feel needed.

Important. In control.

(That’s a whole other conversation for another day…)

But here’s what I realised:

I was needed.

Just not like that anymore.

I was needed to work 𝗢𝗡 the business.
𝘛𝘰 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘵.
T𝘰 𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵.
T𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥.

Not just be dragged back into it every five minutes.

I was still working hard.
Still putting the hours in.

But now?

I had space to think.
To make better decisions.
To focus on growth.

A𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱.

Turnover went through the roof.
A team of 10 became 40.
We hit £500k… then doubled it.
Then opened another salon.

That doesn’t happen when you’re stuck “doing the do.”

There’s a big difference between being self-employed… and being a business owner you know.

Self-employed feels like freedom…
until you try to take time off and everything falls apart.

A real business?

You should be able to leave for a month or three…
and come back to it doing better than when you left.

If that feels miles off right now…
At least you’re being honest.
