Conserving the Star Carr headdresses🦌

The antler headdresses found at Star Carr are some of the most famous and mysterious finds from the remarkable archaeological site in North Yorkshire.

Many of them are on display in our current exhibition, β€˜Star Carr: Life after the ice’.

🌟 New Blog Post! 🌟 Ancient Trails & Salt Ways in South Leicestershire

LAHS Member, John Lacey, investigates a lesser known pre-historic trading route from north to south.

A number of prehistoric routes are known to have traversed the northern parts of Leicestershire, which are usually considered to be salt ways for the transport of salt from the coast of Lincolnshire, which may have been considerably further west than the present coastline. Evidence of similar routes in the southern half of the county is sparse but John investigates.

Lovely article from Archaeological Services, University of Leicester (ULAS) discussing Time Team episodes in Leicestershire & Rutland. We grew up in the 90s and archaeology was never presented as a study option or career path in our schools. Time Team taught us everything we know about archaeology at that time. God bless Mick Aston! πŸ’œ

Since its original broadcast in January 1994, Time Team has brought amazing archaeological stories into the homes of millions and is rightly well-loved across the world for its informative and enga…

We've found literally tens of thousands of pieces of worked flint in our time, but to this day, still only one bronze age barbed and tanged.

It's a beauty though πŸ˜πŸ’ž

Yesterday, we presented to 'The Field Detectives', a lovely archaeological group who loaned us three of their finds to learn more about them.

Our challenge was to haft the Neolithic polished axe, Mace head and spindle whorl then report back on our process. It was a joy to document our method, the tools we made to create the hafts, what worked, what didn't work so well...

These pictures show the finished products and the tools we made to create them. We will be adding a more detailed account of this on our website soon. The pieces have now been returned to the group who will use them to educate and give more context to these beautiful stone tools.
