UK waste & recycling rules are changing……………and a lot of businesses managing commercial waste are being asked to prove they’ve got control of their waste, not just who collects it, but how the whole setup works.

In reality, many businesses have grown their waste arrangements over time. Different contractors, different services, different data 📊

It works day to day, but it’s hard to see the full picture and harder to defend when scrutiny increases.

At Westbrook Waste Limited, we step back and look at the whole model:

– We audit what’s happening now
– We identify risk, inefficiency, and gaps
– We propose a better collection strategy
– And we manage it end to end

That gives businesses clearer oversight, fewer issues, and more confidence that their waste arrangements will stand up as legislation tightens.

If you’re responsible for waste across one or more sites and want a clearer view of how your collections really work, happy to show you what we do.

Message me, Andrew Bower, if you’d like a better approach to your environmental impact, significant time benefits, risk reduction and cost improvements!

Contamination is one of the biggest and most expensive challenges UK businesses face in the waste management sector.

And the truth is… most companies don’t even realise it’s happening.

Last week, I visited a site that was paying far more than they needed to for their general waste bins. The issue wasn’t volume, it was contamination. Cardboard and recyclables were being thrown into their general waste bins because the bins weren’t clearly marked. We spent 20 minutes reviewing their setup.

20 minutes. That’s all it took to identify the issue and implement a clear segregation plan with:

♻️ Proper bin placement
♻️ Better signage
♻️ Team awareness

This week, their general waste dropped by 28%, simply because materials were going into the right stream.

Small changes → big impact.

Both for the business and the environment.

Recycling is such a vital practice that significantly impacts our environment ♻️

It’s not just about reducing waste; it’s about conserving resources and minimising pollution. When we recycle, we give materials a second life, which helps to save energy and reduces the need for new raw materials 🌳

Creating a culture of recycling requires collective effort and awareness. It’s important for us to understand what can be recycled and to encourage others to do the same. By making recycling more accessible and engaging, we can inspire more people to participate 🤝

At Westbrook Waste Limited we are constantly working on sustainability, and together, we can foster a sustainable future and protect our planet for generations to come 🧡

Let’s make recycling a priority in our daily lives! 🌱

The Birmingham bin strike is now much more than just a local issue it’s become a reminder of just how essential the waste & recycling industry is. For many, bins are out of site and out of mind, we place the bins on the curb or behind the shops and magically the contents disappear. However, when the collections stop, as they have in Birmingham, the impact is immediate and undeniable. Overflowing bins, bad smells, increased vermin, and genuine public health concerns quickly follow, revealing just how much we rely on those who keep our streets clean.

Waste collections are often taken for granted, those whose work in ensuring the public health of our towns remain an invisible force. As a reminder of their importance all through “covid lockdown” the bins continued to be emptied by our colleagues, who driven by a sense of public duty rose to the occasion and kept society going with limited thanks.

However, waste services now offer so much more than just the protection of public health they offer a route to greater sustainability. Across the country millions of collections are carried out, both for waste and recyclables, with hundreds of thousands of tons of secondary raw materials being delivered to recycling centres destined to become new products or packaging. If we are to achieve greater circularity the collection of quality segregated materials will be crucial, and it is that silent environmental force, the “binmen”, that will deliver it for us.

♻️ENGLAND’S HOUSEHOLD RECYCLING RATE RISES TO 44 PER CENT♻️

England’s household waste recycling rate improved to 44.0% for the last financial year, reversing a recent decline, although still below pre-pandemic levels and substantially below the now-dropped 50% target the Government set for 2020. Englands recycling rate two years ago was 43.4%.

The provisional data, shows that total waste from households increased to 21.7 million tonnes in 2023. This equates to 337 kg per person.

The amount of waste sent for recycling increased by 2.4 per cent to 9.5 million tonnes, while residual waste remained largely unchanged at 12.1 million tonnes. The increase in recycling was primarily driven by a significant 10.8 per cent rise in organic waste recycling (due to more garden waste from a wetter summer), offsetting a 2.4 per cent decrease in dry recycling materials.

Let’s try to hit our national recycling ♻️ target of 50% this year 👊

📦📉 Did you know? The UK uses a staggering 12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard every year. With a recycling rate of just 45%, that means 7 million tonnes end up in EfW or landfill annually—that’s heavier than the Great Pyramid of Giza! 😲♻️

We can do better. Let’s recycle more and waste less. Recycle with ♻️Westbrook Waste Limited♻️ today!
