As a business owner, it’s always go go go…
Sometimes you need to rest, relax and reflect which gives you time to re-energise while getting back to nature.
For me and my wife, camping in the beautiful south wales area of Abersoch this week has been a real tonic.
The sun, the wind and the rain make you realise what it is to be human.

Its important to have effective health and safety measurement and monitoring as a key to smart decisions, safe working and compliance.
When running a site for a client, I use all of my human skills to ensure everyone entering the site is heard, has a voice, feels safe, is aware of all hazards and can speak up and STOP when necessary.

The STOP never means a delay, it just means that what has been planned doesn't meet the needs of the task to ensure safe working without some extra controls in place or completely re-thinking the job because things have changed, and on site this is minute by minute.

Ever heard the phrase `slow down to speed up'. In manufacturing we used this a lot. Basically, you get your quality right and improve, performance and efficiency by knowing exactly where your going. Once the quality is right, you can then introduce a speed that matches the demand.
The same applied on sites.

By monitoring and measuring using software to allow direct feedback from the mobile phone of each worker we end up with valuable `live data' that can show trends, hot spots, repeat problems and areas of concern that require attention. Issues, actions, heads-ups, investigations all captured and useful.

Monitoring and measuring is a mandated legal requirement and also helps site management make better decisions.

McGeever Ltd has committed to push forward with the use of software to enhance and facilitate its monitoring, measurements, audits, inspections, issues, observations, risk assessments, toolbox talks, etc etc.

This is a portal software and gives me everything I need to evaluate and help the teams conducting the tasks to operate more effectively by understanding their environment fully and maintaining safety.

The importance of hazard perception and evaluation is understanding when things are not right and culturing a workforce/team not to proceed blindly based on static information and outdated communication. The team aren't being driven like sheep, they are driving with full collective information as they need it.

This is not a sales pitch for , but a genuine observation that people need information to make decisions. The more information we have the better the decisions we can make.

If we provide the means for that information to be easily retrieved, along with all the human elements of leadership, we will further enhance safety everywhere in my professional opinion.

I was just looking at my LinkedIn profile and reading the headline to see if it was the correct message that I'm sending out? Its good to keep reflecting and self analysing.

So my headline says;
Founder specialising in CDM, engineering and manufacturing compliance, risk reduction and business leadership through enhanced health & safety

So, I broke it down and all the core competences are self explanatory. After 40 years in industry, engineering, manufacturing and construction there is experience across these sectors. Having been a director of a 200 strong business for 11 years, sending teams across the world to install new, manufactured capital equipment teaches you a thing or two. So I'm happy with that part. 🤩

Risk reduction and business leadership. This part comes into everything that I have been involved with and the people and teams I have been part of. As a director of health and safety and engineering, every element of the process involves thinking about health and safety, as well as the processes of design, procurement, manufacturing, installation, service, aftersales and even refurbishment and end of life of the systems/machines (demolition and recycling). So yes happy with this part as well.🤩

through enhanced health and safety. I wrote this some time ago, but wanted to explore what I mean to portray.

What is enhanced health and safety? 🤔

Well what I meant when I was writing this statement, is this;

Health and safety is not a stand alone system. If affects everything and everyone inside and outside of business. Hazards and risk is everywhere. From driving your car to work or otherwise, to being in your business to do your work, working from the home office or flying all over the world to do your work.
Health and safety should not be taken in isolation because human beings are affected by our environment wherever we are.
So the meaning of enhanced health and safety means that when I look at a business and their systems, I'm not just looking with a view on health and safety in isolation but with an `enhanced' view of the wider business functions that should have health and safety running through them like a special thread. Each department feeds the next, so from designing intrinsically safe machinery, with and eye on the people who will attend to that machinery to maintain and clean it, and procurement who can determine the correct selection of materials and resources that can provide safe and certified value.

So having had my self appraisal, am I happy with my headline?

Yes I can say that I think this fits me perfectly and unless I ran it through AI (which i haven't) I wouldn't be able to get it any more perfect. 🤩
