☀️ Willow Brook Farm Open Day Event ☀️

Many thanks to some of our lovely supporters and clients, who attended our farm open day on Thursday 25th June. This was an exciting opportunity to demonstrate to our clients how to practice SFI management, through examples showcased on the farm. Our consultants Chris, Andrew, Alex, Anna and Jack held discussion groups throughout the afternoon, focusing on topics such as sustainable farming practices, capital grants and infrastructure planning.

If you missed us this time, keep your eyes peeled for our next event at Willow Brook Farm!

Anna has been part of the Harvey Hughes team since June 2020, originally joining during her placement year from Harper Adams University before returning full-time in 2023. With nearly six years’ experience within the business, she has developed a strong and well-rounded skillset in agricultural consultancy.

Originally from North Yorkshire, Anna moved to Cheshire nearly 10 years ago to study at Reaseheath College, before progressing to Harper Adams University where she completed a BSc (Hons) in Agri-Business. She has since further strengthened her expertise by completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural Law.

Outside of work, Anna spends much of her time farming. Following the sale of her family’s pedigree Holstein herd, she retained a number of cattle and relocated them to Cheshire, where they have gone on to achieve success at local shows in recent years.

Anna specialises in planning applications and agricultural appraisals, alongside advising on a wide range of government grant schemes. She particularly enjoys working with a diverse client base and seeing projects progress from initial concept through to completion.

A busy and productive Q1 for our Discussion Groups 👏

Our Next Generation group (18–35 dairy enthusiasts) have been out learning, sharing ideas, and building knowledge through a range of meetings and tours:

🌱 Annual Silage Competition
Judged by Jonathan Whitter (Gro Agri), with a very close result. Congratulations to Grady Alderdice for winning with a first cut sample from Bidlea Dairy. The group explored forage analysis and how silage quality directly impacts milk production.

🐄 Dovecote Park Limited Tour
A full insight into the beef supply chain—from lairage to finished product—alongside discussion on current market challenges. Thank you to the Dovecote agricultural team for an excellent tour.

🌽 Talking All Things Maize
Graham Harris (Frontier) covered variety selection, crop health, and the importance of good fermentation at ensiling—an insightful and practical session.

The Crewe Discussion Group have also had a strong start:

🌱 Annual Silage Competition
Judged by James Thomson (JT Nutrition) and hosted by James Oulton. Well done to John Colclough for taking the top spot. The group reflected on last season and looked ahead to forage expectations for 2026.

🧬 Genetic Progression
Richard Bostock and Trevor Stapleton (Genus ABS) discussed how genomic testing supports better decisions on breeding, improving efficiency and profitability.

👥 Being a Better Employer
Hugh Pocock (Cultura Connect) led a session on recruiting and retaining staff, focusing on flexibility, development, and attracting the next generation into agriculture.

🙏 A huge thank you to all our speakers and hosts for your time, expertise, and continued support.

🌿 Meet the Team – Alex Lewis 🌿

Alex has been a valued member of the team since 2016, bringing a wealth of expertise across agri-environment schemes, ecology, and land management. Starting out with a focus on BPS and Countryside Stewardship, Alex now specialises in ecological consultancy and Environmental Land Management projects.

With a strong academic background, Alex achieved a First-Class BSc in Ecology studying between Lancaster University and Macquarie University in Sydney, before completing a Masters in Conservation Science. She later went on to complete a fully funded PhD through the prestigious Perry Foundation Scholarship, alongside gaining hands-on experience in ecological surveying and protected species work, including Great Crested Newt licensing.

Alex’s passion for the environment extends far beyond the UK. From volunteering on an elephant conservation project in Namibia to qualifying as a safari field guide in South Africa and scuba diving in Australia, her global experiences bring a unique perspective to her work.

Closer to home, Alex enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, and their Border Collie, often exploring the countryside or getting involved in farm-based educational activities. She is particularly passionate about helping children and young people understand farming and where their food comes from. At home Alex has built up the reputable Crewe Green Sunflowers.

⭐ “The best part of my job is the variety – being out on farm, meeting clients and working in the countryside every day.”
