At this time of year, late August in Manchester and the rest of the UK wasp nests on houses are usually fully established and very active. 🐝

Nests that started with a single queen in spring have had months to grow. By August and September, a successful nest can contain thousands of wasps, although the exact number varies considerably. This is also when people often suddenly notice a nest because there is much more traffic going in and out.

On houses, common nesting spots include lofts and roof spaces, under roof tiles/eaves, wall cavities, soffits and fascia areas, sheds and garages. Sometimes you won’t actually see the nest—you’ll just see a steady stream of wasps entering and leaving a small gap in the property.

Late summer is also when wasps can become more noticeable around people and sugary foods. The colony’s behaviour and food needs change as the season progresses, while new queens and males are produced. Eventually the old colony dies off as autumn arrives; the same nest normally isn’t reused the following year, although queens can establish a new nest nearby.

If you’re seeing lots of wasps repeatedly using one particular hole or gap in a house, that’s a strong indication there may be an active nest inside or immediately behind it. It’s best not to block the entrance while it’s active, as that doesn’t necessarily eliminate the colony and can cause wasps to seek another route.
