Policy & Research | EU W**e Support Package: Production must match viable demand

The EU’s 2026 w**e package addresses structural oversupply and climate risk, giving Member States more flexibility to support vineyard adjustments.

EU assistance may cover up to 80% of eligible costs for qualifying climate investments, with access depending on national implementation and eligibility.

Producers should connect restructuring decisions with demand by variety, w**e style and export destination, while importers should assess how vineyard changes could affect future supply.

For policymakers and researchers, the question is whether support reduces persistent surplus while improving vineyard resilience.

💬 Importers, how are suppliers’ vineyard restructuring plans influencing your sourcing decisions?

Graperoutes connects policy signals with applied research, turning complexity into clarity for the global w**e industry.

Country Watch | Cabo Verde: Tourism opens doors. Reliable supply wins repeat orders.

Sal and Boa Vista accounted for 82.1% of hotel guest entries in 2025, concentrating the hospitality opportunity.

Yet in the second quarter of 2026, guest entries rose while overnight stays fell, making arrivals alone a weak guide to w**e demand.

For w**e suppliers, the commercial test is reaching the right accounts with dependable island delivery.

Fogo’s internationally recognised w**es offer local distinction, but awards alone don't establish buyer demand.

For W**emakers: Target a specific hospitality requirement with clear delivered pricing and reliable replenishment.

For Importers: Assess Fogo w**es alongside core imports, checking availability, margins and buyer interest.

For Buyers: Test a distinct local selection and let repeat orders guide expansion.
What matters most when adding a w**e to your Cabo Verde range: price, provenance or reliable supply?

Zinfandel travels under several names, and that matters when interpreting a market map.

VIVC records the variety as Primitivo, number 9703. Zinfandel, Tribidrag, Crljenak Kaštelanski, and Kratošija share the same grape identity, but w**es with those names can reflect different origins, styles, and w**emaking choices.

We selected the United States, Germany, Sweden, and Japan for their visible listings, useful product detail, and value as producing markets and export benchmarks.

The Swedish sample includes Italian Primitivo alongside Californian Zinfandel. The Japanese sample includes w**es from Italy, the United States and Chile. These assortment differences matter: the price panels describe the w**es sampled, not a national price ranking or a comparison of identical bottles.

For producers, the map can help organise export research around origin, style and retail channel. For merchants, the reconciled identity can make product classification and range explanations clearer. Shiraz, Petite Sirah and Plavac Mali are included as explicitly limited relationships, rather than price-validated alternatives.

Prices use standard single bottle listings and one dated ECB conversion. Germany has only four retained observations, so we don't publish a price range. Catalogue presence, including order assortment w**es, does not establish sales or consumer demand.

From the Vineyard | Santorini, Greece: Ktima Sigalas
Rethinking where water comes from

On Santorini, freshwater is scarce. Prolonged droughts and rising temperatures are putting greater pressure on vineyards traditionally grown with little irrigation.

Ktima Sigalas installed drip irrigation supplied by desalinated water and treated wastewater. Soil sensors and weather monitoring help the team decide when to irrigate and how much water to apply.

The approach tackles both supply and use: alternative sources reduce freshwater dependence, while controlled delivery directs water to the roots. The EU CAP Network reports approximately 30% lower freshwater consumption per hectare. Higher yields and revenue remain projected benefits.

For other producers, the lesson is to consider where water comes from alongside how carefully it is used. For buyers, those operational changes offer something concrete to discuss when assessing how a vineyard is preparing for dry years.

💬 What has changed most in how you manage water?

Policy & Research | AI in vineyard climate adaptation: Air temperature alone is not enough

Weather forecasts alone can miss the temperatures sun-exposed grapes reach, limiting growers’ ability to anticipate damage.

Washington State University’s AWN CropAI provides seven-day berry temperature forecasts and optional thermal imaging to help growers assess heat risk and time mitigation.

Forecasts currently cover Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, while wider validation and evidence that tool-guided interventions reduce losses remain research priorities.

For importers and distributors, suppliers’ heat exposure, water availability and mitigation capacity deserve attention when assessing quality consistency and continuity of supply.

💬 When sourcing w**e, do you ask how producers manage heat risk and water constraints?

Country Watch | Greece: More w**e shipped, less value captured.

Greek w**e export quantities rose 12.07% in 2025, while export value fell 1.67%. The production recovery was uneven, with PDO output falling 10.25% in 2025/26.

Greece’s export opportunity depends on matching distinctive w**es to buyers who will reorder at sustainable prices.

For W**emakers: Offer clear price tiers and dependable supply, then measure success through margins and repeat orders.

For Importers: Compare Nemea Agiorgitiko producers for portfolio value, checking style, landed cost and replenishment.

For Buyers: Trial naturally lower alcohol Greek whites for aperitif and lighter dining occasions, then track repeat purchases.

Which matters most in your Greek w**e range today: price, distinctiveness or reliable supply?

Nebbiolo is a useful reminder that a grape name alone does not define a retail position.

In this snapshot, bottles appear under Langhe Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco.

The US, Switzerland, the UK and Japan were selected for observable retail availability, useful pricing evidence and a specialist retail perspective.

The price cards report the observed middle 50% in USD, plus a median and sample size where at least five qualifying listings were recorded. These are small merchant samples, with different appellation and vintage mixes. Four of the five Swiss observations are Borgogno Barolos. The US observations come from a Sacramento store catalogue.

For producers, the map can help frame the next export research question: where does a comparable appellation and style appear?

For merchants, it can help organise a range discussion around origin, structure and ageing potential. Neither use establishes demand or commercial suitability.
Pinot Noir and Sangiovese offer bounded style references; Barbera offers a different role in the Piedmontese portfolio. Individual w**es still matter.

Which grape variety do you produce, sell or want to explore? Tell us in the comments.

From the Vineyard | Austria: Hofkellerei Liechtenstein
Changing varieties, keeping the roots

In Austria’s Weinviertel, Hofkellerei Liechtenstein moved part of its vineyard from red to white grapes. Yet the vines already had something worth keeping beneath the surface: established roots.

In 2022, the estate converted 2.5 hectares to Riesling, Grüner Veltliner and Furmint. It grafted shoots of the new varieties into existing vine trunks, leaving the root systems in place.

The new growth could draw on those roots, and the estate reports harvesting white grapes in the second year. That marks a return to harvest, although full yields and conversion costs were not disclosed.

For producers, the useful question is what an existing vineyard can contribute to its next chapter.

For buyers, it is a reminder that a new grape variety can arrive with an established vineyard behind it.

💬 What would you want to preserve when changing your vineyard’s direction?

Policy & Research | Wildfire Smoke: Prevention Begins in the Vineyard

Oregon State University researchers are developing protective grape coatings to reduce the uptake of smoke compounds before they affect w**e quality.

Its 2024 vineyard trials tested different smoke concentrations and exposure timings, including grape analysis and w**e sensory assessment.

The coatings remain experimental: practical value depends on reliable protection, workable costs and the quality of the finished w**e.

For producers and buyers, the research highlights the importance of connecting vineyard exposure records with grape testing and finished w**e assessment.

💬 Importers, what evidence do you request from suppliers following wildfire smoke exposure?

Country Watch | Ghana: The opportunity starts with an affordable final price.

Affordable sweet and sparkling w**es appeal to Ghanaian consumers, while a smaller group is developing a taste for dry w**es.

The commercial challenge is delivering the right style at a price buyers can sustain once freight, taxes and distribution costs are included.

Small opening orders and mixed shipments can help businesses test demand before committing to larger volumes.

For W**emakers: Offer accessible sweet and sparkling w**es with flexible order sizes and dependable replenishment.

For Importers: Compare sparkling w**es on delivered cost, taste and margin, then test a focused selection with customers.

For Buyers: Introduce a small, affordable dry w**e range through tastings or w**es by the glass, expanding where repeat sales justify it.

Which is the bigger barrier for your Ghana business: final selling price, order size or reliable supply?
