National Association of Sessional GPs (NASGP)

National Association of Sessional GPs (NASGP) The NASGP is the UK’s only independent membership body for the flexible, urgent and community workforce. As GP locums ourselves, we understand the challenges.

We are a national advocacy for the sessional workforce, working in partnership with NHS organisations to support local workforce solutions. We champion, support and connect you to make your work as rewarding as possible, for everyone. Get started now by joining our three-month free trial, or join now if you’re a registrar to get three months for free after your CCT as well as support while you tra

in. By joining NASGP, you can also join our nationwide NASGP Locum Chambers, providing you with monthly peer support wherever you work plus management support for your portfolio work. Running a portfolio GP career can be a real challenge, particularly for GP locums, so we’re here to offer you unique support with NHS pensions for GPs, Self Assessment tax advice for GPs, advice on Locum Forms A and B and Type 2 forms. We have supported sessional GPs since 1997 and we’ve won General Practice Awards and HSJ Partnership Awards for our work around the UK. You can hear from our founder and chair, Dr Richard Fieldhouse, on BBC radio, national newspapers, at BMA events, and in the trade press.

We are absolutely delighted to welcome Kyle Yeldon to the team!

Recruiting Kyle as our new managing director is a real win! He has real drive and skill to take the NASGP and support for its members to new heights.
–Having spent 13 years at NHS England, including his crucial role as head of primary care services, his deep understanding of the NHS landscape is exactly what we need at this critical time for general practice.
–Kyle brings a remarkable track record of delivering complex, large-scale transformations, from major technology rollouts to improving community service access.
–His practical expertise will be invaluable as we continue to grow our membership, enhance LocumDeck, and advocate for the proper integration of sessional GPs into local primary care systems. Our members and practices will benefit immensely from his leadership.

This year's Conference had a lot to say about our work – and it matters: safe working limits in the contract. A DDRB uplift for OOH. A ballot on a subscription model. A debate about whether salaried GPs are being exploited.

Dr Clare Sieber, there as an Agenda Committee member and has written a detailed reflection on what was discussed, what passed, and four takeaways for day-to-day sessional working life.

Sessional GPs make up a significant share of GP – but the Conference remains partner-heavy. That's worth changing. We’re exploring how GP locums handle staying safe while working in unfamiliar – managing clinical risk, making decisions confidently, and knowing how and when to seek support.

We’ll share the results and discuss experiences in our next 'nline session, 'Staying safe in unfamiliar settings'.

Last year, we found that the majority of GP locums we surveyed had gone straight into locuming.

Join us with Medical Protection to discuss the opportunities and challenges of heading straight into the current NHS GPs jobs market as a locum. RSVP: https://nasgp.circle.so/c/events/life-after-cct-locum-gp-your-first-step-or-a-flexible-career-ede8677c-ef03-4564-842b-d38609c55920

In a survey of 129 GPs, 52% said they had not had any experience of job roles before becoming a GP locum.

For today’s GP registrars, locuming looks like a great first step – but following the launch of the 2026/7 contract, it’s more competitive than ever.

Most locum GPs are not confident turning down low-paid shifts and have faced pressure to work beyond terms they have agreed, the National Association of Sessional GPs (NASGP) has warned.

Thinking of starting out as a GP locum? After our next event, here's what you'll walk away knowing:
–How to actually get set up, from registration to your first practice
–What to expect on rates, workload and responsibilities (what's normal)
–How to handle self-employment: tax, finances and managing risk

GPs have voiced frustration with reimbursement scheme limitations following NASGP’s coverage.

GPs told the NASGP that the scheme was ‘far too restrictive’.
–”Another way of recycling the money so it does not get used effectively. A good cost saving measure to hurt primary care.”
–”Please colleagues contact your LMCs, practice managers and partners as we need to unite on this one and work with the government to change this over.”
–“Very poorly thought through: [this is] what happens when you don't properly consult those who actually know what would deliver impact.”

Some 14% of GP locums report that they have worked without terms, according to the results of a new NASGP survey: https://nasgp.circle.so/c/news/three-in-four-gp-locums-think-saying-no-damages-chances-of-future-work-25087b86-b99e-4394-9b98-ee1c7d6364c7

The survey also found that LocumDeck users were:
–Less likely to agree to unclear work
–Less likely to worry saying no affects future work chances

Last month, NASGP brought together experienced sessional GPs to explore a simple question: How do you make appraisal work when the system doesn’t fit how you work?

What followed was a set of five practical mindset shifts, grounded in GPs’ real experiences.

We’ve shared the topline findings here. If you’d like the detail – and the comment section – join our GP community and read it in full today: https://nasgp.circle.so/c/posts/appraisals-aren-t-built-for-how-you-work-this-is-70ccdcad-02a6-492e-b137-fea9e85d9f45

Discover how fellow GPs handle:
–Saying no.
–Negotiating clearly and setting expectations early
–Recovering conversations when things feel off.

We’re tackling all of these at our next FREE Locum Lab! https://nasgp.circle.so/03-59

Hear from GP peers who’ve developed practical ways to protect their time, hold steady boundaries and stay in control of how they work.

When you’re moving between practices, it’s rarely obvious what’s normal, what’s fair or what’s genuinely open to negotiation, and that uncertainty can quickly build into pressure or frustration.

If you hate conversations around workload, rate expectations, last-minute requests and unclear responsibilities, then this one one for you.

Attend to find out how to approach tricky conversations with confidence.

How do you talk about rates and terms?

We’ve launched our latest survey for the NASGP community about it: https://nasgp.circle.so/c/news/nasgp-launches-gp-survey-on-locum-rates-and-terms-a46af08e-52ee-42e3-a8ed-0c6ab951630f

We’re asking:
–whether you think turning down work affects your future bookability
–whether you can turn down poorly-paid sessions
–how you set your terms.

Let us know your views as part of our short, two-minute questionnaire and you’ll be in the running for a £50 Amazon gift card.

We’ll report the results in our event on 12 May as part of a free GP-only forum about negotiations like these at work: how GPs say no without damaging relationships, set expectations early, and recover conversations when things feel off.

Responding to the survey will give us a clear picture of what these issues are like for grassroots GPs – and help us report on the issue outside of NASGP. Tell us about your experiences to help shape the future of GP locum rates and terms.
