🍷 Our very first Château Bessan Ambassador Award!

We’re absolutely delighted that Chris Turner and the team at the Red Lion Brewery Tap, Market Drayton, took home the very first Château Bessan Ambassador Award at this year’s Joule’s Taphouse Awards!

This award celebrates a real passion for Château Bessan, from championing our wines to sharing their story with customers and making them a firm favourite behind the bar.

A huge congratulations to Chris and the whole team. A very well-deserved win, and a lovely way to celebrate our growing Château Bessan family! 🍇

Sunday roast’s arrived. You know what to do. 🍷

Gravy, roasties, all the trimmings, and a glass of Bessan Red to go with it.

Oh, go on then… 🥂

A glass of Bordeaux Blanc never takes much persuading.

Fresh, crisp and beautifully chilled, our Château Bessan Blanc is made for exactly this sort of day, when one glass (or three) sounds like a very good idea.

Go on then. Pour us one.

Some evenings call for red. 🍷

Our Château Bessan Rouge is a proper Bordeaux red - rich, rounded and made for taking your time over.

The sort of bottle that starts with dinner and somehow stays on the table long after the plates have disappeared.

Grown and made here at Château Bessan, in the heart of Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux.

Tucked into the top corner of the eastern slope is Le Coin.

The neighbouring woodland gives this parcel more shade than the rest of La Face Est, helping to stop the red grapes from ripening too quickly.

Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have traditionally been grown together here and, unusually, are also vinified together. Picking at the right moment is important, while the fruit is ripe but still has enough acidity for the style of rosé Bessan wants to make.

This little corner of the vineyard is where some of that fresher character begins. 🍷

Le Grand Blanc is one of the key areas for Bessan’s white wines.

It sits high on the plateau, facing south west, with limestone-rich gravel over sandstone below. The elevation and soil give the wines a distinct minerality and make this part of the vineyard particularly well suited to Sémillon.

It’s here that some of the grapes for Bessan’s Bordeaux Blanc and AOC Cadillac are grown.

A little patch of the vineyard with a big role in the white wines we pour in our Taphouses. 🍷

La Face Est gets its name from its position on the eastern side of the vineyard.

The slope catches strong midday sun, but by late afternoon the vines get some relief from the heat. This makes it suitable for Merlot and Cabernet, while the more sensitive Sauvignon Blanc also does well here.

The reds take a little longer to ripen than those across the ridge on the south-facing La Côte. Underfoot, the soil is drier with a shallow seam of limestone.

It’s another part of what makes the different parcels at Bessan so interesting. 🍷

La Côte gets the full force of the Bordeaux sunshine.

Sitting over the ridge, this south-facing part of the vineyard has very little shade and quite different growing conditions to the cooler plateau.

The soil here is sparse and gravelly, so the vines have to send their roots deep in search of water and nutrients. They take longer to establish and tend to produce smaller, more concentrated berries.

The grapes are harvested later and go into Bessan’s rich Claret, AOC Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux.

A good example of how much can change from one part of the vineyard to another. 🍷

Down in the Bassain, things get a little cooler.

This part of the vineyard forms a natural basin, holding cooler air and moisture even through dry summers. It can make spring frost a bit of a headache, but those cooler conditions are particularly good for Bessan’s white varieties.

Here you’ll find Muscaris and Souvignier growing over a seam of red clay, which holds moisture deeper in the soil and adds minerality to the wines.

The result is fresh, fruity whites with delicate aromas and a lovely crisp mineral character. 🍷

Meet Coin des Dieux.

Sitting 90 metres above the Garonne, this is the highest and most prized parcel at Bessan, planted entirely with Merlot.

What makes it particularly interesting is what sits beneath the vines. Limestone gravel gives way to clay with a rare blue ferrous seam, a soil more commonly associated with Pomerol and particularly well suited to Merlot.

The grapes grown here are an important part of Château Bessan and, in exceptional years, are used to make Cuvée Lucques Bessan.

A very special little corner of the vineyard. 🍷
