🧺🔥 Hoover and Candy tumble dryers: what this week’s headlines got wrong ⚠️
You may have seen reports that a coroner wants “1.6 million tumble dryers pulled” after a tragic house fire in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, in which a father and his nine-year-old daughter died.
We’ve read the coroner’s report and the full written responses from Haier (who own Hoover and Candy) and the safety regulator OPSS. The real picture is more measured than the headlines:
⚖️ The inquest found a Hoover DX C10DCER-80 condenser dryer was the most likely cause. The exact fault could not be identified.
🚫 There is NO recall, NO safety notice and nobody has told owners to stop using these dryers. The model named stopped production in 2022.
🔍 The coroner asked Haier to investigate that model and similar Hoover and Candy condenser and vented dryers. Haier says its testing found no systemic fault. OPSS has an open investigation and says it has not yet seen Haier’s root cause findings.
⚠️ This is NOT the same as the Haier heat pump dryer safety notice. That one DOES require you to stop using the dryer until it’s modified. Worth checking which you own.
🔧 Repair engineers tell us lint gets past the filter and collects around the heater where you can’t see it. Clean the filter every load, rinse the condenser monthly, and get an older dryer cleaned out properly by an engineer.
🌙 And whatever brand you own, never run a tumble dryer overnight or when the house is empty.
