👉🏽 Champion and scale place-based entrepreneurship

“A groundbreaking initiative, the Inclusive Innovation Catalyst, has been launched by TIN Ventures to transform inclusive entrepreneurship across underserved communities and regions.

The project has been introduced in collaboration with The Open University, the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce-Black Business Collective (GBCC-BBC), and the Innovation Alliance for the West Midlands (IAWM).

The Catalyst is the output of a series of National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) ‘Catalyst Conversations’ (https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/catalyst-led-conversations-engaged-futures-themes) which explored the role of Civic Universities as key partners in driving inclusive community innovation and enterprise. These conversations highlighted how universities, local organisations, and business networks can collectively overcome systemic barriers to growth for diverse founders.

Too many diverse founders in the UK continue to face systemic barriers to validating ideas, accessing capital, and scaling businesses. This gap stifles innovation, limits economic opportunity, and prevents communities from realising their full potential.

The Inclusive Innovation Catalyst is designed to overcome these barriers, building investible and net positive businesses with overlooked talent.”

The Department for Business and Trade ‘National Survey of Registered Businesses’ (NSRB) categorises businesses into four segments based on where they are in their export journey, from | Sustain (current exporters who have exported in the past 12 months) | Reassure (have previously exported but not in the last 12 months) | Promote (have not exported but have a product or service that could be developed for export) | Challenge (businesses that do not export and believe their product/service is unsuitable for export).

The proportion of businesses exporting increases with business size, and the ‘Promote’ category represents a large potential for future export growth through starting to export, exporting more intensely, and/or exporting to new markets. Achieving a £500k or greater turnover signals that a business is highly likely to exhibit export potential. What may surprise you is that looking at the breakdown by region it shows that 19% of businesses who are in the ‘Promote’ segment with a turnover exceeding £500k are in the Midlands and 17% in the North East (DIT, 2019). This is significantly higher than the overall UK proportion of businesses with a turnover greater than £500k in the ‘Promote’ segment (13%) and indicates a significant potential opportunity to increase exports in these regions.

This data has informed our TIN Ventures collaboration with The Open University to launch our Business Export Exchange Programme. export accelerator will enable us to work with established SMEs to develop an export strategy and implementation plan packaged around The Open University Business School triple accredited MBA to improve their confidence, capacity, and capability to launch products and services in global markets.
