Capital Grants 2026 Update: FG1 & FG2 Fencing Grants and SHINE Features
We have received the welcome news that the Capital Grants 2026 scheme will open for applications on 30 July 2026, providing farmers with the opportunity to apply for eligible capital items, including FG1 and FG2 fencing grants.
Farmers planning to apply for the FG1 and FG2 fencing capital grant items should be aware of an important requirement when their proposed fencing is located on a SHINE feature identified through the Historic Environment Farm Environment Record (HEFER).
Under the Capital Grants 2026 rules, fencing can be used for a range of eligible purposes to support agricultural and environmental objectives. However, where the proposed fencing is located on a SHINE site identified through the Historic Environment Farm Environment Record (HEFER), farmers must obtain written approval from their local authority historic environment adviser before carrying out the work. In the previous round of funding, it was not possible to erect fencing on a SHINE site. DEFRA have effectively softened the rules by allowing fencing on a SHINE site, with the prior consent of the local authority.
To obtain approval, farmers will need to contact their local authority historic environment adviser by email and provide the relevant details of the proposed fencing works to support their request.
We appreciate that these requirements may be unfamiliar, and obtaining written approval can involve more than simply submitting an email request. Our Agricultural Team strongly encourages farmers to seek guidance and support throughout the process. We can help you understand the requirements, identify when approval may be needed, and provide assistance in preparing the relevant information to support your submission to the local authority historic environment adviser.
If you are considering applying for FG1 or FG2 fencing grants and your HEFER identifies a SHINE feature, please contact our Agricultural Team on 01832 732241 for support before starting any works.
