Hello Everyone
I touched a little bit in my previous post about the soft squishyness of the xanthoria parietina lichen when it's wet. Keeping this contrast in mind I have been using needle felted elements to add the softness. I really enjoy the juxtaposition between the hard textures from the glazes and clay combined with the soft textures and details of the embroidered felted elements. These often have multiple colours and beaded elements making them perfect for summer with dresses becoming more wearable. With multiple colours in each piece they pair with many different coloured outfits becoming the pop of colour or complimenting perfectly.
Available at the studio (as there are so many options, Ill put some on instagram stories for those shopping online)

Hello Everyone
Lichen is such an interesting organism, with over 18000 species there are so many different shapes, colours and textures, often overlooked on high tree branches.
One of my favourites is the Xanthoria parietina which is also known as the common yellow as it appears in a wide range of environments being less susceptible to pollution. This lichen is also a colour changing lichen, going from bright yellow to bright green to grey depending on environment and wetness. As you can imagine between it being wet and dry is a massive texture change from crispy and sharp when dry to soft squishy and sometimes a bit slimey.

In the image I've put some bowls with some of my favourites and you can see the similarities between the pots and the lichens in forms and some textures

Customer Testimonial- Pots and Coffee Experience
“My daughters gave me a Pottery Experience as a Christmas present because the mug I was using was about 10 years old (also a present from them). But as you can see, the cup I made is just the right size for my espresso but would be too small for tea. So I have two options; 1. I use the old mug for tea and this new cup for espresso or 2. I go back for more pottery and make a bigger mug”

You can book your pottery experience via www.imsceramics.com
Sessions running weekends and weekdays, email to arrange a date

RAKU AND PIZZA DAY!
More information as I walk to the studio, with a lovely dog interruption

15th August 10am to 5pm

Join us for a relaxed day of creativity, fire, and good company. Glaze two unique pre-made pots using a choice of colourful Raku glazes, then watch the magic unfold as they’re fired and transformed in the kiln.

While your pots are firing, create your own wood-fired pizza with Joe and enjoy it fresh from the oven. Between firings, pizzas, and plenty of conversation, you’ll have time to soak up the atmosphere and discover the unique results of each glaze.

A laid-back, social experience filled with creativity, anticipation, glowing pots, and delicious pizza. Bring a camping chair, settle in, and enjoy a day of making, eating, and connecting.

Hello Everyone
Thank you to everyone who came and visited the studio over the two North Yorkshire Open Studios weekends and thank you to the mother for looking after the studio on the first weekend.
I hope you all enjoyed wandering down the garden and didn't get attacked by roses!
While I was preparing the garden for visitors I had to snip a few of the roses off, they have been displayed in the competition piece for Potfest, Penguin books. After our recent visit to Hobbiton I obviously had to do something inspired by this so I made a little collection of Hobbit pieces.
A flower jar with Smaug and his mountain, hobbit hole sugar jar, and vessel as well as a little spoon inspired by Gandalf's pipe.

Multi purpose functional art inspired by lichens.
I have always enjoyed picking non conventional things from the garden or my travels to display.
This is probably the beginning of my noticing and loving lichens from collecting good twigs on walks. I once came home with a whole clump of moss from Northumberland and made a gnome home on my windowsill, anyway I digress.
These vessels can be used for flowers, in this case a very cottage themed bouquet, chives, thyme and lavender. All gathered from my garden. They can also be used as a drinking vessel, bringing pieces of art that can be used everyday in your home has always been a priority for me so creating multifunctional pieces is always fun, opening up the possibilities.

Come along and nosey at the garden as part of North Yorkshire Open Studios this weekend 10am to 5pm at Scagglethorpe, Malton
Thank you
Iona
