Finding great people is one thing. Keeping them is another.

In today’s competitive market, SMEs need smart recruitment strategies to attract, hire, and retain the best talent. A strong team isn’t just an asset—it’s the driving force behind business success.

So, what works?

A Clear Employer Brand – Why should someone work for you? A compelling employer brand showcases your culture, values, and what makes your SME a great place to work. People don’t just want a job—they want to belong.

Structured Hiring Processes – Avoid rushed decisions. A strategic recruitment plan, complete with well-defined job roles, competency-based interviews, and candidate experience best practices, ensures you hire the right fit every time.

Competitive Compensation & Benefits – SMEs may not always match corporate salaries, but they can stand out with flexible benefits, career growth opportunities, and a supportive culture. It’s not just about pay—it’s about value.

Employee Development & Progression – People want to grow. A robust learning and development strategy helps retain top talent by providing opportunities to upskill, advance, and make an impact.

Onboarding & Engagement – A great hire can turn into a quick resignation without an effective onboarding process. Creating an engaging and structured introduction ensures new employees feel supported from day one.

Great HR isn’t just about hiring—it’s about building a workforce that thrives. Let us help you attract, retain, and develop the talent that fuels your SME’s growth.

That’s where expert HR consultancy makes all the difference. HR isn’t just about compliance and contracts; it’s about creating the right structure, culture, and processes to support sustainable growth.

🔹 Talent Acquisition & Onboarding – Hiring the right people at the right time is crucial. A structured recruitment process ensures you attract top-tier talent who align with your company’s values and goals.

🔹 Employee Experience & Retention – Scaling isn’t just about hiring—it’s about keeping your best people engaged. A strong employee experience strategy fosters motivation, productivity, and loyalty, reducing costly turnover.

🔹 HR Policies & Compliance – As you grow, so do the legal and regulatory demands. We help SMEs navigate HR complexities so you stay compliant and protected, giving you peace of mind.

According to CIPD, a staggering 4 million people have left their jobs because their employers couldn't accommodate flexible working.

This isn’t just a work-life balance issue—it directly impacts employee retention, engagement, and productivity. In a competitive job market, SMEs that fail to adapt risk losing top talent.

Since April 2024, UK employees have had the legal right to request flexible working from day one of employment, with the ability to make two requests per year.

For SMEs without a dedicated HR team, handling these requests fairly and compliantly can be a challenge. Employers are required to consult with employees on decisions, which means having clear policies is essential to avoid disputes.

Flexible working, when managed well, can boost morale, reduce absenteeism, and increase productivity, but getting it right requires the right processes and expert guidance.

That’s where we come in! We help SMEs implement flexible working policies that work for both employees and the business—ensuring compliance, fairness, and long-term success.

ProspHR Solutions offers accessible, authentic & practical HR advice, services and consultancy when you need it.

🐾 Meet Olive – Director of Pawsitive Vibes 🐾

This is Olive. She’s more than just our office dog; she’s our number one go-to for comfort, calm, and all-around good vibes. Whether it’s offering a nuzzle when someone’s feeling low or inspiring a screen break with a brisk walk, Olive knows how to bring out the best in us and lift our spirits. She is also a supremely gifted listener and very partial to the odd gravy bone.

Research from Harvard Business Review highlighted some of the fabulous benefits of having pets in the workplace, including lower stress, better morale and stronger team connections.

You can read the article here: https://buff.ly/46eSPJg

However, we know it’s important to find the right balance, respecting our colleagues who might feel very differently and may not be up for a nuzzle or staff with phobias or allergies. It’s important to get it right for everyone.

Do you have an office pet? Maybe your own Pawsitivity Officer? How has it worked for your team? Do you have a policy in place? What steps have you taken to ensure it’s beneficial for everyone?

We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments! ⬇️

At ProspHR Solutions we will help you to nurture your most precious resource, your people.

With approximately one in seven individuals in the UK being neurodivergent, it's crucial to design inclusive environments that foster productivity and well-being for all employees.

Here are some tips to create a more inclusive workspace:

• Implement flexible workstations: Offer a variety of options such as standing desks, quiet corners, and collaborative spaces to cater to different work styles and sensory preferences.
• Create sensory-friendly environments: Use adjustable lighting, noise-cancelling features, and acoustically designed spaces to minimise distractions.
• Establish quiet spaces and retreats: Designate areas where employees can take breaks and recharge, particularly beneficial for those who may need a reprieve from overstimulating environments.
• Provide clear navigation and signage: Well-defined pathways and consistent, intuitive signage can help reduce anxiety and enhance accessibility.
• Offer diverse meeting spaces: Accommodate different communication styles by providing various meeting options, from one-on-one settings to larger collaborative areas.
• Support remote workers: For those working from home, encourage the use of productivity apps and communication platforms, and implement regular check-ins to keep everyone on track.
• Provide neurodiversity training: Educate your team about neurodiversity to foster understanding and create a supportive culture.

Here at ProspHR Solutions we have the know-how and expertise to support SMEs to design and implement truly neuroinclusive workspaces and policies.

Employers, are you ready for the upcoming holiday pay reforms?

These changes, explained by Samantha O’Sullivan from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) in Personnel Today, aim to simplify holiday entitlement and pay for irregular hours and part-year workers.

If you employ irregular hours or part-year workers and your holiday year starts in January 2025, you can begin implementing the holiday pay reforms, which apply to holiday leave years starting on or after 1 April 2024.
Here’s what you need to know:

🔹 New Definitions: Irregular hours workers (e.g., zero-hours contracts) and part-year workers (e.g., seasonal staff) now have clear definitions, ensuring accurate entitlement calculations.
🔹 Pay Methods: From January 2025, employers can choose to:
Accrue leave (calculated at 12.07% of hours worked) to be taken later.
Use rolled-up holiday pay, paid as part of regular wages and shown separately on payslips.

What to Do Now:
✅ Identify affected workers.
✅ Decide which calculation method suits your business.
✅ Communicate these changes to employees.

For a detailed breakdown, check out the full article by Samantha O’Sullivan on Personnel Today.
