Insurance is rarely the most exciting part of running a social enterprise, but discovering that your cover does not match what your organisation actually does is considerably worse!

Most boards aren't built. They're assembled. 💙

Someone knew someone. A trustee brought a friend. A funder asked you to have three directors, so you found three people who said yes.

There's nothing wrong with any of that, it's how nearly every small organisation starts. But it does mean a lot of boards end up with four people who all think the same way, and a couple of gaps nobody has noticed yet.

The gaps we see most often:

• Nobody who genuinely understands the finances, so the numbers go unchallenged

• Plenty of sector knowledge, no commercial thinking

• Nobody with lived experience of the communities you serve

• Four people who are all lovely and all agree with each other

None of that is a crisis. But knowing it means the next person you recruit can be a deliberate choice rather than whoever's available, and it's a much better conversation to have now than in the middle of a funding application.

Tove Crossland, co-founder of Ocean Zen CIC, has spent years building a wellbeing space in Whitley Bay, meditation, holistic therapies, group work, all rooted in helping people reach their full potential.

Her advice for anyone starting out isn't about doing more. It's about knowing what you actually need right now:

"I think it's just getting clear about what you want to do with your business plan and just looking where you might need support for that.

Grab it while you can as long as it's relevant and it's in line with what you need to be doing at this moment, just don't feel that you have to do everything all the time.

So if it's relevant, take it because it might not be there going forwards."

Universities hold a huge amount of talent, knowledge and research, but businesses do not always know how to access it! We’re pleased to have Newcastle University Business School hosting North East Social Enterprise Day 2026.

Alongside teaching and research, the University offers practical ways for businesses and organisations across the region to access new skills, ideas and expertise.

This includes opportunities to work with students through internships and placements. For smaller organisations, an intern can bring additional capacity and a fresh perspective to a defined project, while gaining meaningful experience of applying their knowledge in practice.

The University also leads Arrow, an innovation-support programme that connects regional businesses with relevant researchers, specialist knowledge and facilities across Newcastle, Durham, Northumbria and Sunderland universities.

Since 2018, Arrow has helped more than 300 businesses explore and develop new products, services and ideas. Its purpose is to make university expertise easier for regional organisations to access, not something reserved for large companies with established research departments.

"Since he's been with you, he'll come downstairs when we've got company. And he'll answer the phone in the house."

That's what one young lad's mum said to Corrina Mulholland, six months in.

"I got goosebumps. And it made me change my full trajectory of where I was going."

The other lad went from living in a sheltered housing scheme to having his own house. And he got a dog — a lifelong ambition.

She's straight about the rest of it, too. This was 2008, and she sold that business about two days before she'd have gone bankrupt. She wasn't, by her own account, the most organised business person in the world.

But it left her with a question she now asks everyone she works with in employability:

Say you won the lottery. You travel the world, go shopping, buy everything, tick off every activity you ever wanted. Then one morning you wake up with nothing left to do.

What would you do purely for fulfilment, with no need to earn from it? Working with animals? With children? Writing?

Do that anyway. You've got as much chance of getting a job doing that as you have doing anything else. And then you've won the lottery of life every single day. 🎟️

Does a successful social enterprise always need to become a bigger organisation?

More income, customers, staff and geographical reach are often treated as the clearest signs of success. But if the purpose is change in action, should we be asking a different question?

One of the highlights of North East Social Enterprise Day will be our smaller breakout sessions. Guests can choose between a practical facilitated workshop and our panel discussion:

Our four panellists will bring distinct perspectives:

Ben Fisher, CEO of Innovation Catalyst and co-founder of Re Sports Network, will explore innovation, measurable impact and whether growing an organisation is always the best way to grow an idea.

Corrina Mulholland, leader of Gateshead Community Organisation & Mind Your Business Facilitator, will bring the founder’s perspective, asking how purpose, happiness and balance sit alongside conventional measures of business growth.

Amjid Khazir, founder of Media Cultured CIC, will draw on 15 years of building a grassroots initiative into an organisation working nationally and internationally; exploring longevity, influence and the reality of a non-linear journey.

Sanjee Ratnatunga, economist and founder of Ideas For Change Consulting, will consider what measures such as jobs, growth and productivity miss, including confidence, relationships and the wider value created for communities and places.
