FAQ - How can energy improvements be free? ECO stands for “Energy Company Obligation” – This is free because of a government energy efficiency scheme, which has been launched to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions across Great Britain. However, whilst the installation is free for you – technically it is not free – everybody who is a home owner or a tenant, paying their energy bills for

the last 15 years have collectively been paying a small charge monthly, which goes into this fund. You may remember charges appearing like “Climate Charge”,”Green Levy” or “Environmental Obligation Cost” on bills, which every household and business has contributed towards. These phrases have since disappeared from most of today’s energy bills but are still being charged in 2024, 2025 etc, instead hidden in areas of the bill such as the “Standing Charge” – and all of these payments from millions of households – including yours – have now been collected and put into this government fund. Energy companies are obligated to access this fund to put measures in place to reduce carbon emissions. Under the ECO4 & Flex schemes, medium and large energy suppliers & the government have targets they have to meet or they receive substantial fines.
