How about this for the world's most simple analogy for presenting - or communicating in general to be honest?! A map and a compass.

The map shows where you want to go and the overall route. It's your strategic thinking. This is what your presentation is supposed to be doing - getting your audience from one place to another.

The compass is your guide. It tells you which direction you need to be heading at any given moment on your route. It's your tactical driver. What should your next slide/story/handout be to keep your audience moving in the right direction?

Simple really, but quite profound in some ways. I've observed that what most of us do when we're creating presentations is just to start walking!
.. but in terms of journeys, doesn't it make more sense to tell people where they're going before they set off? I don't know about you but I find it much easier to hike when I know what I'm aiming for.

And in terms of the compass-bit, just stop every now and then and say to yourself "am I getting my audience closer to the end point with this? Or am I adding an obstacle to the route, such as an irrelevant detail or a side-loop that disorients people."
