⚠️ A member of your team raises a bullying complaint.

What happens next?

Would you know exactly what to do?

For many SME business owners, the honest answer is "probably not."

And that's completely understandable.

Bullying and harassment complaints are some of the most challenging situations an employer can face. Emotions are often running high, there are legal considerations to think about, and every decision you make can have a lasting impact on the people involved.

The reality is that most small businesses don't have an HR manager sitting down the corridor ready to step in.

Instead, you're left trying to navigate a difficult situation whilst also running your business.

That's exactly why we created our Bullying & Harassment Toolkit.

Designed specifically for SMEs, it provides practical guidance, clear processes and ready-to-use templates to help you manage complaints professionally, fairly and with confidence.

Inside you'll find:

•Guidance on your responsibilities as an employer

•A step-by-step process for handling complaints

•Support for conducting investigations fairly and consistently

•Practical advice on supporting employees throughout the process

•Ready-to-use templates, including complaint forms, investigation plans, witness statements, outcome letters and wellbeing check-ins

Because handling a complaint well isn't just about reducing risk.

It's about creating a workplace where people feel safe raising concerns, confident they'll be listened to, and reassured that issues will be dealt with fairly.

And that's good for your people and your business.

The Bullying & Harassment Toolkit is available now via our website.

A small investment today could save a significant amount of time, stress and risk in the future.

If you'd like to discuss a specific situation or find out whether the toolkit is right for your business, we'd be happy to help.

You can purchase the toolkit here: https://www.kmhrsolutions.co.uk/resources

How healthy is your workplace culture?

Most business owners think they know the answer.

But when was the last time you actually stopped and checked?

A positive workplace culture isn't built through team lunches, office perks or the occasional staff event.

It's built through the day-to-day experience of your people.

Try this quick culture audit:

•Do employees feel comfortable raising concerns?

•Are managers consistent in how they treat people?

•Do new starters feel welcomed and supported?

•Is communication clear across the business?

•Do employees understand what's expected of them?

•Are workplace policies applied fairly?

•Do employees feel listened to?

•Are different working styles and needs considered?

•Is feedback given constructively and professionally?

•Would employees recommend your workplace to others?

How many did you confidently answer "yes" to?

If there were a few "not sure" or "no" answers in there, don't worry — you're certainly not alone.

The reality is that workplace culture doesn't usually need a complete overhaul. Often, it's a few practical improvements, clearer processes and better communication that make the biggest difference.

At KMHR Solutions, we help small businesses create workplaces where people feel supported, valued and able to do their best work.

No jargon.
No complicated HR theory.
Just practical advice and straightforward support that works in the real world.

If you'd like to take a closer look at your workplace culture, send us a message. We'd be happy to help.

What does an inclusive workplace actually look like?

It's probably not what most people think.

It's not a poster on the wall.
It's not a box-ticking exercise.
And it's not something that only matters in large organisations.

Inclusion shows up in the everyday moments.

It's the manager who genuinely listens when someone has a concern.

It's the flexibility that allows a valued employee to balance work and life.

It's the clear communication that means people know what's expected and feel confident speaking up.

It's creating an environment where people feel respected, supported and able to be themselves.

For small businesses, building an inclusive workplace doesn't need to be complicated. Sometimes the most meaningful changes are also the simplest.

Ask yourself:

Do your employees feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns?

Are policies applied fairly and consistently?

Do people feel supported day to day, not just when there's a problem?

Would your team say they feel valued and included?

When people feel included, businesses benefit too. Teams work better together, retention improves, engagement increases and workplace issues are often resolved before they become bigger problems.

Inclusion isn't about doing everything perfectly.

It's about creating a workplace where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

If you'd like support creating a more inclusive workplace, we'd love to help.

🚨 SME Business Owners – Quick Question...

Are you 100% confident your Right to Work checks are compliant?

Because getting this wrong isn't just an HR issue. It's a legal one.

In fact, businesses can face civil penalties of up to £60,000 per illegal worker if they fail to carry out compliant Right to Work checks before employment begins.

And here's the worrying part...

Many small businesses don't realise they're making mistakes until it's too late.

The good news? It doesn't have to be complicated.

That's exactly why we've created our FREE Right to Work Check Guide – a practical resource designed specifically for busy business owners and line managers.

Inside you'll discover:

• The legal requirements every employer needs to know
• Who needs a Right to Work check and when
• The simple 3-step process: Obtain, Check and Copy
• Which documents are acceptable
• How to create your statutory excuse and protect your business
• Common mistakes that could leave you exposed

No legal jargon.
No complicated HR language.
Just straightforward guidance you can implement immediately.

Head to the Resources section of our website and download your free copy today.

A few minutes of reading now could save you a very expensive headache later.

And if you'd like support with recruitment, onboarding, compliance or any aspect of HR, we're only a message away.

Your workplace policies aren't just HR paperwork

They're the reason your team knows what to expect, and the reason you can handle difficult situations with confidence.

When small business owners hear "inclusive policies", the instinct is often to picture thick HR manuals gathering dust on a shelf.

In reality, the policies that make the biggest difference are usually the simplest ones: clear, practical, and written for real working life.

Not having them in place doesn't mean things run more smoothly.

It usually means managers are making it up as they go, employees feel uncertain, and you're more exposed if something goes wrong.

Policies worth having in place

• Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
• Flexible Working
• Anti-Harassment & Bullying
• Menopause Support
• Neuroinclusivity & Adjustments
• Maternity & Family Leave
• Disciplinary & Grievance

What good policies actually do:

• Give managers a clear framework so they're not winging it when something comes up
• Help employees feel they'll be treated consistently and fairly, whoever they are
• Protect your business if a situation escalates, you'll have a clear process to point to
• Signal to your team that you take your responsibilities as an employer seriously

At KMHR Solutions, we write policies that are tailored to your business, not generic templates that don't reflect how you actually work. Straightforward, practical, and ready to use.

Not sure which policies you need, or whether your existing ones are up to scratch? We offer a free initial conversation. No obligation, just honest advice. Drop us a message and let's have a look together.

What an incredible day! 🌟

Yesterday I attended my very first BABICM Annual Conference at the ICC Birmingham — and wow, it did not disappoint!

Fantastic venue, amazing food, brilliant speakers and some truly wonderful networking. One of the highlights was finally getting to meet so many of our clients face to face — people I've worked alongside but never had the chance to meet in person. Those moments meant so much. 💛

I came home feeling inspired, energised and so proud to be part of such a fantastic professional community.

Thank you BABICM for a truly brilliant day. Can't wait for the next one!

If you run a small business, here’s a question worth asking yourself:

Are your workplace decisions consistent… or just made case by case depending on the situation?

Because the Equality Act 2010 applies to every business, even if you only employ one person.

And most workplace issues don’t happen because someone intended to do the wrong thing. They happen because there’s no clear process behind the decision-making.

Maybe this sounds familiar…

One employee is given flexibility for appointments, another is told no, but there’s no real explanation why.

You hire someone based on “gut feel”, but there’s no documented recruitment process.

A team member raises a concern or complaint, and suddenly you’re wondering what your legal responsibilities actually are.

These situations are far more common than people realise, especially in smaller businesses where things tend to feel more informal.

But informal can quickly become inconsistent. And inconsistent can become risky.

The good news? Protecting your business and supporting your team doesn’t mean drowning in complicated HR policies or legal jargon.

It’s about having clear, fair and practical processes that work in real life.

At KMHR Solutions, we help small businesses put those foundations in place, straightforward policies, practical guidance for managers, and HR support that actually fits the way your business operates.

May, we love it and we're suspicious of it in equal measure.

Two Bank Holiday weekends: one where the rain arrived right on cue (umbrellas at the ready, as tradition demands), and one that actually delivered, sunshine, warmth, and the distinct feeling that summer might just show up this year after all. We'll take it.

Despite the meteorological rollercoaster, it's been a brilliant month. Here's what we've been up to:

• Karen wins Brilliant HR Associate at the HR Consultancy Festival
• A room full of HR professionals, and Karen stood out, which honestly tells you everything you need to know. We couldn't be prouder, and frankly, we'd have been surprised if it had gone any other way.

Also this month

Celebrating Karen's milestone birthday, and we mean the whole month. When the occasion calls for it, why limit yourself to one day? There have been dinners, gatherings, and more than a few well-deserved treats.

Supporting clients through recruitment and onboarding, helping businesses find the right people and get them set up for success from day one.

Building new resources on the Fair Work Agency, what it means for businesses and what to do about it. More on this very soon.

Coming soon: The Fair Work Agency is closer than most businesses realise.

We've been putting together practical, no-jargon guidance on what to expect, and more importantly, what to do before you need to. Watch this space.

In June, our social media focus turns to Diversity and Inclusion, and we think you might be surprised.

The most meaningful steps towards a genuinely inclusive workplace often aren't the complicated ones. We'll be sharing posts to make you think and hopefully act.

Would Your Team Feel Safe Saying This?

Would your employees feel safe saying these things at work?

“I’m struggling.”

“My workload is too much.”

“I made a mistake.”

“I need support.”

“I don’t understand.”

For many organisations, the honest answer is no, and that’s where workplace mental health conversations need to evolve.

A wellbeing policy alone does not create psychological safety. Neither does a wellness initiative. Culture is shaped by everyday reactions.

How managers respond to pressure.
How mistakes are handled.
How absence is discussed.
How comfortable people feel speaking honestly without fear of judgement or consequence.

Employees do not experience culture through policies, they experience it through interactions.

The workplaces with the healthiest cultures are not the ones where employees never struggle, they’re the ones where people feel safe enough to say when they do.

Creating that environment is not a “soft skill”, it’s true leadership.

At KMHR Solutions Ltd, we work with businesses to build workplace cultures where performance and people are not treated as competing priorities.
