Print. Sign. Scan. Repeat. Re-send.

Chase the version that's actually filled in properly. Sound familiar?

A lot of small businesses are still onboarding new starters this way, not because anyone loves paperwork, just because it's what's always been done. E-signatures fix this.

No printer, no scanning, no chasing.

As Breathe partners, we set clients up to sign contracts, policies, everything, straight through the platform.

It saves the days a new starter spends waiting to officially start because paperwork's stuck in someone's inbox.

It's a small switch, but it's the kind that makes week one feel organised rather than chaotic and that matters when someone's still deciding whether they made the right call joining you.

If parts of your onboarding still run on print and post, that's always worth a conversation.

Get in touch.

We're too small for HR software.

We hear this a lot, and it doesn't really hold up.

Smaller teams are often the ones who benefit most.

No dedicated HR person to chase things manually, so a simple system doing the tracking for you matters even more.

We're a team of five, and we use Breathe ourselves: holidays booked and approved in a couple of clicks, one place for company information, training tracked through the Learn module.

It just works at our size. You don't need something built for a business ten times your size.

You need something that fits the one you've actually got.

You're never too small. Small team, right-sized system.

Still keeping track of holiday requests on a whiteboard, or in someone's head?

It works, until it doesn't. A missed message, a forgotten note, and suddenly two people are off on the same day and nobody spotted it coming. You don't need a big overhaul to fix this, just one place where everyone can see who's off, who's asked, and what's approved.

That's why we're Breathe HR partners: it's simple to use, does exactly what it promises, and takes the guesswork out of managing leave.

Small change, fewer headaches. Get in touch or visit the link in bio if you want to see what that could look like for your team.

AI in the workplace still makes a lot of business owners nervous, and that's understandable. Nobody wants to hand over something important to a tool they don't fully trust.

But used well, AI isn't about replacing decisions, it's about clearing the backlog around them. Drafting a first version of a policy. Summarising a pile of feedback.

Flagging a pattern in absence data you'd never have spotted manually. The decision still sits with a person, AI just gets you to it faster.

The businesses embracing this properly aren't cutting corners, they're just spending less time on the bit nobody enjoys anyway. If you're curious how this shows up in the way we support HR day to day, that's a conversation we're always happy to have.

The Department for Business and Trade has confirmed several major Employment Rights Act changes will now land together on 30 October 2026, including new duties to prevent sexual harassment, employer liability for third-party harassment, and a wider set of trade union changes, most notably a new union right of access to workplaces.
A few other dates worth flagging too. Electronic workplace balloting starts 31 August. Tribunal time limit changes are expected around 1 October. And separately, unfair dismissal changes and fire and rehire protections are still pointing to January 2027, with no confirmed date yet.
It's a lot landing in a short window. If you're not sure what applies to your business or when to start preparing, get in touch or visit the link in bio.

An employee juggling school pickups, an elderly parent's appointments, or a partner's care needs isn't asking for special treatment. They're asking for a working pattern that fits the reality of their life.
Businesses that build genuine flexibility around this, rather than treating every request as an exception, tend to see it pay back in loyalty and lower turnover.
It doesn't mean saying yes to everything. It means having a clear, fair approach so requests don't get decided case by case on gut feeling.
If you want help putting that structure in place, get in touch or visit the link in bio.

Knowing who’s off when, who’s covering what, and whether someone’s unused leave is quietly turning into burnout, that’s the bit that catches a lot of SME’s out without the right tools.

It’s part of why we partner with Breathe as out HR software of choice. A few things it makes genuinely easier:

Staff can book and manage their own leave requests, no more chasing emails

Managers get a clear central calendar of who’s off and when, so cover is never a surprise
Reporting flags unused holiday early, before it turns into burn out

You can update who’s assigned as approver if the usual person is going to be away themselves
The software handles the admin. We handle the rest, actually knowing what to do with what it’s telling you, keeping your policies compliant, and helping you build a culture where staff feel able to take the leave they’re entitled to in the first place.

That’s the bit that a lot of businesses miss. Great software still needs the right HR support behind it to make it count.

Get in touch or visit the link in our bio to find out how we help clients get the most out of Breathe.

Rest and recuperation aren't just personal habits, they're a leadership responsibility.

A manager who never switches off sets the tone for a whole team, whether they mean to or not. If a manager is answering emails at 11pm or taking calls on annual leave, "always on" becomes the unwritten policy, no matter what the handbook says.

Worth asking this month: what does rest look like at the top of your organisation, and is that the culture you actually want to spread?
Get in touch or visit the link in bio to talk through building healthier norms from leadership down.

And if your team needs zero encouragement to crack open a bottle on a Thursday, we see you. No judgement here.
What's worth celebrating on your team this week?
