A will is only worth something if it's valid.

The five most common ways a homemade will fails:

Witnessing. Two witnesses, both present, neither of them nor their spouse a beneficiary. Get this wrong and your beneficiary loses their gift entirely.
Vague wording. "My savings to be split fairly" is not an instruction. It's an invitation to litigate.
No residuary clause. You've listed specific gifts but said nothing about what's left over. Whatever remains falls back to intestacy.
Never signed. Downloaded, drafted, filed in a drawer. Legally worthless.
Never updated. In England and Wales, marriage generally revokes an existing will.

Under the intestacy rules in England and Wales, an unmarried partner has no automatic entitlement. None. It doesn't matter if you've been together thirty years, share a mortgage, and raised children together.

The estate passes down a fixed statutory ladder. Spouse, then children, then parents, then siblings.

Your partner isn't on it.

Their option at that point is a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. A court process, at their expense, while grieving.

A will takes an afternoon. The alternative takes years.
