Continuing our exploration of , we're looking at Health and Safety
Name: Sarah Newman
Position: SAS Safety Solutions and HSEQ Manager at Civils
I have been a safety professional now for 17 years. 13 of which have been in construction, but I “cut my teeth” so speak in the Logistics sector. Back in 2015 I took the plunge to go self employed and build a small business specialising in Construction SME’s, 8 years in I have a 7 strong client base where my main client is CPC Civils who I am still actively involved in the day-to-day HSEQ management of the business. I look after a team of 2 but growing to a team of 4.
Being a female in construction can be challenging and certainly has been for me in my career, but I must say it has been the best and most rewarding career I could have hoped for (bearing in mind I wanted to be a Pathologist). I work with some of the most amazing, inspirational, clever and diverse people each with their own unique personalities all working together. This to me makes construction one of the greatest industries to work in.
For me, no day is the same and my days can range from working at home doing admin tasks, out on site carrying out inspections and audits, to writing tenders, overseeing external audits, carrying out accident investigations, meeting with clients and coordinating meetings, to delivering coaching and training on site all whilst juggling being a mum to a 6-year-old little boy.
Finally, anyone female thinking of joining construction do it… it really is a great industry to get into
