Hybrid working can feel like a juggling act, especially in a small team.

You want to offer flexibility, but you still need customers looked after and work delivered.

A few basics really help:
👉🏼 Be clear on when people should be available
👉🏼 Agree how you’ll communicate
👉🏼Focus on outcomes, not just who’s online

And don’t forget wellbeing yours included. A walk, time with family or simply stepping away from the laptop can make a big difference.

If you’re feeling it, chances are your team is too.

Recruitment on a small business budget is tough, but it’s not impossible.

You might not be able to compete on salary, but you can offer:

👉🏼 Flexibility
👉🏼 Variety
👉🏼 Real impact

Use your network, write job adverts in plain, human language and focus on skills and attitude, not just perfect experience. Whatever you do, keep candidates updated.

Small businesses can be brilliant places to work. Make sure that shows in how you hire.

HR is usually the hat that only comes out when something goes wrong!

But when you employ people, a few simple basics make life so much easier:

👉🏼 Contracts that match what people actually do

👉🏼 Clear policies on holidays, sickness and conduct

👉🏼 A consistent way of handling performance and absence

Nothing fancy, nothing overly corporate, just clear, fair and written down.

If your contracts and policies haven’t been looked at for a while, May is a great time to give them a refresh.

We’re Climbing Snowdon for Young Futures! 🏔️

I know several of the brilliant people and businesses taking on this challenge, and although I can’t make the climb myself, I’ll absolutely be supporting them.

They’re raising funds for The Flourish Project UK, an incredible charity helping young people build confidence, resilience, and a more positive future.

Right now, 1 in 5 young people aged 5–16 are experiencing a probable mental health disorder.

Many are struggling with low self-esteem, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lies ahead.

The Flourish Project is doing something about that—working in schools and communities to give young people the tools they need to:

✔ Build confidence and resilience
✔ Develop a growth mindset
✔ Create healthier thinking patterns
✔ Believe in their future

If you’re able to support, even a small donation can make a real difference:

Let’s get behind an amazing cause and help young people truly flourish.

Small business owners: the world of work is changing and the spotlight on fairness is only getting brighter

You’ve probably seen mentions of new employment laws and a Fair Work Agency in the news and thought, that’s for big companies we’re too small for anyone to worry about us.

In reality, most issues the new system will look at are the same things that trip small employers up every day:

• Holiday pay not quite matching how people actually work.
• Sick pay rules that are unclear or applied differently from person to person.
• “That’s just how we’ve always done it” when it comes to hours, breaks and overtime.

Your team don’t expect perfection. But they do expect to be treated fairly, consistently and with some transparency about how decisions are made.

Getting this right does two things:

• Protects you if anyone ever questions your practices.
• Builds trust, which keeps good people with you for longer.

That’s where good HR support comes in. Not more red tape, but clearer, fairer ways of working that actually make life easier.

If you’re making decisions about hours, holiday or sickness on a case by case basis and you’re worried it might come back to bite you, send me a message and I’ll happily tell you where I’d start tidying things up.

Probation, use it, don’t fear it

Worried about getting probation wrong? You’re not the only one.

Here are 3 quick answers to questions I hear from business owners all the time:

Can I extend probation?
Often yes as long as it’s allowed in the contract and you’re clear with the employee about why and for how long.

Do I need loads of paperwork?
You don’t need a huge pack of forms. You do need written expectations, notes from your check‑ins and a clear record of any conversations about performance.

What if it’s just not working?
Don’t wait until the last week. Talk early, be specific, and get advice so you follow a fair, sensible process.

Probation is there to protect both you and them not to scare you.

If you’re in the middle of a tricky probation right now, feel free to drop me any questions.

Why good people leave small businesses

It’s rarely “just about the money” when a good person leaves a small business.

More often, it’s one (or more) of these:

➡️ They’re not clear on what “good” looks like in their role.

➡️ They can’t see how they’ll grow if they stay.

➡️ Communication is last‑minute and inconsistent, so they stop trusting what they’re told.

None of this needs a big budget.

It needs clearer expectations, regular 1:1s and more honest conversations about the future.

If you’ve lost someone great in the last year, which of these rings a bell for you?

You’re not bad at running a business.

You’re just trying to be the MD, the ops manager and the admin assistant all at once.

Here are 3 signs it’s probably time for your first proper hire (or your next one):

➡️ You’re constantly saying “I’ll do it tonight” and then working late.

➡️ Nothing moves unless you touch it first.

➡️ You spend more time fire fighting than thinking about where the business is going.

Most small businesses only reach out when they’re already exhausted.
You don’t need a big HR team you need a clear role, a simple hiring process and someone who does this all the time, not once in a blue moon.

If you could hand over one chunk of work tomorrow, what would it be?
