After several requests I have uploaded a video of the Kola Peninsula sample of the stunning elongated prismatic crystals of murmanite in ussingite, both in PPL and XP. Sorry about the birdsong in the background, forgot to turn off the audio! FOV - 4mm

Another great find in an old forgotten sample box saved from the skip! This sample is from the Lovozero Alkaline complex consisting of rare pink Ussingite a sodium aluminum silicate hydroxide mineral with characteristic low relief and 2nd order birefringence colours and ever rarer stunning elongated prismatic crystals of Murmanite, a sodium titanium silicate hydroxide mineral cinnamon brown/green colouration and revealing a prefect cleavage in PPL and high 2nd order birefringence colours in XP. FOV - 4mm

From hand sample to thin section, demonstrates how petrographic analysis can be used to determine rock type. Although the sample was unlabeled, observations of the hand specimen revealed a medium-grained crystalline igneous texture. Thin-section analysis under plane-polarized light (PPL) and cross-polars (XP) showed a well-developed porphyritic texture, indicating a two-stage cooling history. Petrographic examination also identified euhedral zoned clinopyroxene and olivine crystals within a melilite-rich groundmass, allowing the sample to be classified as a melilite-bearing lamprophyre.

I was trained as a geological technician at the former South London College between 1982 and 1984. Like many others at the time, I was taught how to handle and prepare geological samples for oil and extraction companies, as well as for university Earth Science departments.
I was fortunate to secure a position within the former Geology Department at Birkbeck College, where I gradually progressed through the ranks. During my time there, I obtained a BSc, followed eventually by a PhD, before becoming a university lecturer. I taught igneous petrology, economic ore geology, and geological mapping, much of it centered on the beautiful and geologically complex Isle of Skye.
After 38 years, I left academia due to the sharp decline in student numbers following Brexit and the COVID lockdowns. Seeing the direction things were heading, I accepted an enhanced voluntary severance package — with nearly four decades of service behind me, it was probably one of the best decisions I ever made.
Throughout those 38 years, I witnessed a steady decline in the skills of thin section preparation. This became especially evident as experienced thin section technicians retired and were never replaced. In fact, I often took it upon myself to prepare sections for my own PhD students because the delays in obtaining sections from their research samples had become intolerable.
Now, outside academia, I have made it my mission to help preserve this essential skill, as it remains a vital tool in geology. The identification of minerals in thin section is fundamental to the classification of rocks and to understanding their petrogenesis. I founded Geology Hub UK to provide thin section preparation services for individuals, institutions, schools, colleges, and companies requiring rock sample sectioning. I also offer one-to-one training sessions for individuals interested in learning this essential thin section preparation skills. Please DM for further information and costs of thin section preparation.

One of my favorites thin section, a spherulic rich rhyolite with radiating court crystals, forming spherules. Collected from a 1m wide d**e crossing a drainage ditch on the Heaste Road, Isle of Skye. Just happen to be in the location while running a Birkbeck 1st Geology Field class and a road ditch had recently been deepen to improve drainage in the local Jurassic sediments exposing this stunning outcrop. The ditch had filled with debris obscuring the outcrop by the following year, 2019, and the last time the former Geology Dept of Birkbeck took students to Skye! A great example of being in the right place at the right time!
Field of view 4mm. XP
