What a brilliant day we had at Ysgol Llanfyllin on Wednesday running a financial education workshop with the Year 7s!

The pupils were full of great questions and really got stuck in, talking about money, saving and making smart choices from an early age. It was a real pleasure to see so much enthusiasm, and we came away feeling very inspired.

A huge thank you to the fabulous Gemma Oliver, financial advisor, for joining me and sharing her knowledge so generously. And of course, diolch yn fawr to the staff and pupils at for making us so welcome.

Helping young people feel confident about money is something close to our hearts, and we can’t wait to do it again!

Everyone knows about 31 January.

Far fewer people know there is a deadline three months earlier.

If you file your Self-Assessment tax return on paper, your deadline for the 2025/26 tax year is 31 October 2026. Not January. October. Miss it and it’s an automatic £100 penalty, even if you don’t owe a penny in tax.

📄Paper return: 31 October 2026
💻Online return: 31 January 2027

There’s a second date worth knowing, too. If you owe less than £3,000 and you’d rather, have it collected gradually through your PAYE tax code than pay it in one lump in January, you need to have filed online by 30 December 2026. It’s one of the genuinely useful bits of the system and hardly anybody uses it.

We file everything online for our clients, so if you’re with us this isn’t something you need to think about.

But if you’re still posting a paper return each year, have a look at the calendar on the wall. October comes round quickly.

Not sure which deadline applies to you? Send us a message and we’ll tell you straight.

September gets all the credit.

Fresh start, new shoes, everybody full of good intentions. I said as much myself a few weeks ago.

Nobody warns you about October.

October is the month where the novelty has worn off, It’s dark by the time you shut the laptop, and the plans you made in September are sat in a notebook you’ve quietly stopped opening.

I felt it this morning. Darker mornings, where I needed to turn on the light after turning off the alarm, with a to-do list i’d written four weeks ago in a spirit of optimism I no longer recognise.

Here’s what I’ve learned since starting KC back in 2016: the October dip is completely normal, and it is not a sign that something is wrong with you or your business.

You don’t need a brand-new system. You need one small thing crossed off.

Mine this week is the filing drawer i’ve been ignoring since roughly March. Deeply unglamorous. But it will be done.

What’s the one small thing you keep putting off? Tell me below...misery loves company.

The Autumn Budget is on Wednesday 28 October. Which means we’re now firmly into the season of speculation and there will be a great deal of it.

Our advice, as ever: don’t make decisions based on a headline about something that hasn’t happened yet.

Then on the day itself: we’ll be watching, and we’ll tell you what genuinely affects you and what’s just noise.

No 47-page summary. Just the bits that matter to your business.

One thing we would like to know, though... what would you actually want to see in this Budget? Tell us below. We’re always curious what’s hurting most out there.

Quick one for limited company directors, because this one has teeth. Identity verification at Companies House has been a legal requirement since 18 November 2025. It applies to every director, every person with significant control, and equivalent roles. not just to brand new companies.

The verification itself is genuinely quick. It’s remembering to do it that catches people.
If we look after your confirmation statement, we’ll be in touch about it. If we don’t, check your confirmation statement date, check your birth month, and don’t let it drift.

And if you’d rather someone simply kept an eye on this sort of thing for you, well, that’s rather the point of us.

Farming doesn’t do steady. One year the weather behaves, prices hold and the numbers look brilliant. The next one you’d rather not talk about.

The tax system understands this better than it gets credit for but only if you ask. Averaging lets unincorporated farmers even out profits across two years, or five, so a good year isn’t taxed at a punishing rate simply because it followed three difficult ones. There are conditions, broadly the profit need to differ by more than 25%, and there are rules around partnership changes and businesses starting or ceasing. But where it applies, it can make a real difference to the bill.

Farm accounts aren’t just a bigger version of ordinary accounts. They have their own rules, their own reliefs and their own traps.

We look after a good number of farms and smallholdings around Llanfyllin and across Powys and Shropshire, and we’re always happy to talk it through over a paned at your own kitchen table.

Croeso i chi gysylltu (you’re welcome to get in touch).

If you employ anyone... even one part-timer, even family...October brings two changes under the Employment Rights Act 2025.

We’re accountants, not employment solicitors but payroll sits right next door to all of this, and we’d far rather flag it now than hear about it later. If you’re not sure where your business stands, have a word and we’ll point you towards the right help.

This one matters, and it’s easy to miss, so stay with me.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started this April for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000.

The next wave is £30,000 - from 6 April 2027.

Here’s the bit most people haven’t clocked: the return that decides whether you’re in that wave is the 2025/26 one. The one you’re about to file. HMRC looks at your qualifying income on that return, then writes to tell you you’re mandated.

Qualifying income means gross turnover from self-employment and property, before expenses. Not profit. Turnover. And if you’ve got both, they’re added together.

So a smallholding with a bit of rental income and some contracting can be nowhere near £30,000 of profit and comfortably over the line on turnover.

Which is exactly why filing early is worth more than usual this year. Do it now and you’ll know your MTD start date with around 18 months to prepare. Leave it to January and you’ll find out with ten weeks to go, in the middle of tax return season, when every accountant in the country is flat out.

Ask us to check your 2025/26 figures now it’s a quick look, and it takes the guesswork out entirely.

Everyone knows about 31 January. Far fewer people know about 5 October and it’s the one that catches people out.

If you had income in the 2025/26 tax year that HMRC doesn’t already know about, you need to tell them by 5 October 2026. Miss it, and a penalty can follow.

Registering isn’t the same as paying. Nothing is due until 31 January 2027. This is simply the paperwork that lets you file at all.

And here’s the honest bit: register in early October and you’ve got nearly four months to get it right. Registeron 20 January and you’ve got a fortnight and a headache.

Not sure whether it applies to you? Drop us a message, it’s usually a two-minute answer.
