Yesterday we talked about the new minimum wage rates so let’s look at them in more detail.
Did you know – you’re probably going to tell me you are super smart and this is old news but
• You must be of school leaving age to get minimum wage.
• The apprentice rate is applicable to anyone under the age of 19 or over the age of 19 in their first year of apprenticeship.
• There are different rates for a Higher Level Apprenticeship – they must be paid the NMW for their age and not the lower apprentice rate.
Let us know if you need guidance.

Statutory Sick Pay.

It doesn't really matter, does it? It's not a lot of money and besides, if someone's taking the proverbial with their time off, they're not paid for the first 3 days so it's no great impact on the business, is it?

Changes from April mean that SSP will become payable from day one of absence.

For employers, that means you will be paying someone for that day they couldn't be bothered to come in. For that Monday when they'd had a heavy weekend. For that Friday when they were going away and wanted to get an earlier train.

So yes, it does matter and from April, it's going to matter even more.

This next Employment Rights Act (ERA) change relates to time limits.

Currently, there is an Employment Tribunal claim time limit of 3 months which means that once 3 months have passed after employment has ended, it's usually ok to breathe a sigh of relief (most employers worry about these things in any slightly acrimonious end to employment, regardless of whether they've done anything wrong or not).

In October this year though, that time limit will double from 3 to 6 months, meaning that once employment comes to an end, the employee will have up to 6 months to decide to lodge a claim and the employer's worried wait will be extended.

Worried about this or any other ERA change coming down the line?
