This mainspring is 2 metres of hardened carbon steel and will be wound up to fit inside this 5cm clock barrel. If a clock mechanism is taken apart carelessly or a mainspring snaps it will release all of this energy at once - causing a lot of damage.

I've recently been gifted this beautiful German box clock case. It no longer has a dial or mechanism but hopefully, we can find a suitable mechanism and dial to bring it back to life.

Sometimes a clock will look worse before it gets better...
This clock had a build-up of old wax, polish and dirt. I stripped all the muck off with methylated spirit before reapplying a layer of traditional shellac polish. Looks so much smarter.

This reproduction Dutch Stoelklok uses a Crown Wheel or 'Verge' Escapement. Verge Escapements are less common, particularly in more recent clocks, and they are one of the earliest known types of escapement. Moving to measuring time using oscillating movement like this, rather than continuous processes such as flowing sand or melting candles, allowed for increasingly accurate clocks.

A worn pivot hole like this causes the gears to slowly move away from each other and no longer mesh properly. To remedy this the hole is carefully filed on the opposite side to move the centre back to the correct spot. After this, a small piece of brass (called a bushing) is inserted to replace the worn area.

After the initial investigation, clocks then receive an initial cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner. This removes old oil, dirt and layers of tarnish which can slow or stop a clock. It also can reveal worn brass hidden by the dirt.

The first step in any clock repair or service is investigation. Each clock is thoroughly photographed and carefully examined for wear, faults and damage. This clock also has a painted dial and casework which will make disassembly more tricky.
