Pressure can be positive – but stress is rarely good for us. And yet, 74% of adults say they've felt so stressed in the past year that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope.

And 79% of people say they frequently experience work-related stress, yet only 32% say their organisation has plans in place to spot the signs and prevent it.

When stress is caused or made worse by work, it becomes a health and safety issue and employers who don't assess the risks and put reasonable controls in place can also face serious legal and financial consequences.

Right to work checks are a legal must for every UK hire. But they're only the start.

With ordinary unfair dismissal rights kicking in after just 6 months of employment from January 2027, getting your hiring right has never mattered more.

Here are 5 things you can do to make sure you make the right hire:

✅ 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: they might be able to do the job, but if their values don’t align with your company’s then chances are they won’t be the best fit.

✅ 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀: as part of the interview process ask someone to undertake a relevant task such as a presentation or technical exercise as this will help you assess if they can do the job.

✅ 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: these are an excellent way of testing behaviours to ensure you select the best people for your business. We highly recommend Great People Inside who offer fully customisable assessments.

✅ 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺: introduce the potential hire to the other people they will be working with. This is an effective way of getting other people’s input as well as seeing how they interact with others.

✅ 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: while many companies won’t give detailed references, it will help you verify dates and positions, as well as confirm their CV or application form is accurate. If possible, see if you can speak to previous managers to verify their skills and work ethic.

Did you know that from 30 October if a trade union rep turns up at your business and wants to talk to your staff, you have to let them?

While it might be tempting to refuse, all that means is they will send you a letter telling you when they are going to turn up!

Our advice? Invite them in and offer them a nice cup of tea and biscuits. 😀

Being approachable and willing to listen will help build a cooperative and constructive relationship which will prevent future misunderstandings. And employees tend to feel more loyalty and respect for a business, if they see their representatives treated well!

Although, it goes without saying: if you know you have some unhappy staff, you might want to take positive steps to sort that out before October, otherwise you might not get the outcomes you want.
