I'm Tara Hopkins, an experienced HR professional who helps businesses to survive and thrive by providing access to good HR support, no matter their size.

โ€‹With my small team, we can (amongst other things):
- help you set up as an employer for the first time
- review your employment documentation and update it for you
- provide advice

on people management issues
- take care of all your HR administration for you on an ongoing basis
- implement and manage a HR records system for you
- help you with health, safety and wellbeing at work
- help you with staff data protection
- provide training to support you or your managers

We work with you to create an affordable solution that suits your business. That might be a one off project or a few hours per month of regular support.

It's the last Friday in June and is statutory school leaving date for anyone currently in year 11. So, what does this mean?

If you want to employ someone before they reach their statutory school leaving date:
โ–ซ๏ธ you have to get permission from the local authority
โ–ซ๏ธ there are some strict rules about working hours
โ–ซ๏ธ they also have to be at least 13!

But because of their age, they aren't actually entitled to all the normal employment rights. We use a different letter of employment for these young people, to reflect the situation accurately.

However, once someone reaches the end of year 11 (officially that's 26 June this year) then you need to make sure they get a new letter of employment that gives them all their new rights, e.g., paid holiday

For some employers, this means sending a group of people new letters each June, ready for their transition into full employment.

While it can be genuinely exciting to welcome a young person into your team, it can be easy to forget that for many Gen Zers (16-26 years old), it will be their first ever job.

This means they may not be aware of how to write emails, answer the phone or a hundred other things we assume everyone knows but are in fact skills picked up over time.

The key is to provide support in a way that builds their confidence, rather than knocks it, and sets them up to become a real asset to your business.

Good HR isn't complicated or out of reach. It's about getting the basics right, treating people well, and making sure your business is set up to handle whatever comes its way.

And the CIPD have marked the day brilliantly bringing together HR professionals from different parts of the globe to share their insights on some of the topics shaping our profession right now, from AI and people-centred leadership to learning and productivity. It's well worth a read!
