You may have seen news today about critical PHP2Shell vulnerabilities impacting a large number of websites.

We wanted to reassure you that we patched all Via Wire environments this evening to address CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619.

The patches were applied and the fixes tested within hours of the recommendation to update.

Most "shadow IT" isn't anyone trying to cause trouble, it's a member of staff signing up for a free tool that solved a problem quickly, often connecting it with a one-click "Sign in with Microsoft" prompt that nobody in IT ever sees.

Here's a phishing trick worth knowing about: QR code phishing, or "quishing". Because the malicious link is hidden inside an image rather than clickable text, and the scan happens on someone's phone, it slips past a lot of the protections built into email security.

The lures tend to look mundane on purpose, a fake parcel delivery notice, a payment request, an MFA re-verification prompt, anything designed to get a quick scan without much thought.

The best defence is simple: get into the habit of pausing before scanning anything unexpected, especially if it's asking for a login or payment, and make sure your team knows to flag anything that looks off.

If your business has cyber insurance, or is looking to get it, worth knowing the bar's risen in 2026. Insurers are increasingly rejecting applicants, or refusing claims, not because of worse threats, but because businesses can't show their security controls are actually in place and working.

What they're looking for: MFA on every account (especially admin ones), proper endpoint protection rather than basic antivirus, regular documented patching, backups that are tested rather than just assumed to work, and ideally a written incident response plan.

Keeping every device in your business updated sounds straightforward. In practice, for a hybrid or remote team, it is one of the things that most consistently falls through the cracks.

Someone dismisses the update notification. A laptop is rarely in the office when updates are pushed. A device gets missed because nobody has a complete view of what the estate actually contains.

Microsoft Intune addresses this through automated patch management. Updates are pushed to every enrolled device automatically without any action required from the user. No gaps. No missed devices. No vulnerabilities left open because the prompt was dismissed.

This capability is included with Microsoft 365 Business Premium. Most businesses on that plan have never configured it.

If you're due to renew Cyber Essentials, the scheme changed in April 2026 and the bar's higher now.
MFA is mandatory on every cloud service where it's available, including Microsoft 365, and missing it anywhere in scope is an automatic fail.
Critical updates now need installing within 14 days of release, and cloud services generally can no longer be left out of your assessment scope.

If you use Windows 11, September's update (KB5124008) is worth knowing about, Microsoft's calling it the biggest update of the year. The taskbar can move to the top, left or right of the screen again, and a new "Administrator Protection" security feature has started rolling out for businesses.

The date to actually pay attention to: Windows 11 24H2 (Home and Pro) stops getting updates on 13/10/2026. If any of your machines are still on that version, it's worth checking your upgrade plan now rather than waiting until October.

Good news on the connectivity front: gigabit-capable broadband now reaches 91% of UK premises, up from 89.6% just six months ago, with full fibre alone covering just over 85%.

If you looked into upgrading your business connection a while back and full fibre wasn't available at your address, it's worth checking again, coverage has moved on faster than a lot of people realise, particularly through new full fibre builds.

A UK engineering firm lost £20m in 2024 after a finance employee joined a video call where everyone else, including the CFO, was an AI-generated deepfake.

The National Cyber Security Centre has confirmed similar voice-cloning cases here since, mostly aimed at finance teams.

The unsettling part is how little it takes: about 30 seconds of audio from a video or podcast is enough to clone a convincing voice using cheap, widely available tools.

The best defence isn't more security software, it's a simple habit: any urgent payment request gets verified through a second, separate channel before anyone acts on it, no matter how convincing the call sounds. Worth raising with your finance team this week if it hasn't come up yet.

If your Microsoft 365 renewal has landed since July, you'll have noticed the price change: Business Basic and Standard both went up (roughly 10-17% depending on the plan), while Business Premium barely moved.

That's worth a second look for anyone currently on Standard to save money, the gap to Premium is now much smaller than it used to be, and Premium brings extra device management and security features with it.

Worth ten minutes this week to check two things: whether you're still paying for any accounts that should have been removed, and whether Standard or Premium actually works out cheaper for your business now.
