"Do I need to get my solar panels cleaned?" is one of the questions we hear most.

For most homes in the UK, the honest answer is: not very often. Panels sit at an angle, so regular rain washes off a lot of everyday dust.

Where it's worth keeping an eye out:
• Bird droppings or moss that sit on the glass and don't wash away
• Leaves building up along the bottom edge in autumn
• Homes near farms, busy roads or the coast, where grime can build up faster

If something does need sorting, please don't climb up there yourself. Working at height is dangerous, and harsh brushes or chemicals can damage the panels. A specialist with the right kit can do it safely.

Myth: "If I've got solar panels, a power cut won't affect me."

It's a really common assumption, but most standard home solar systems switch off automatically when the grid goes down, even on a sunny day.

That's a safety feature. It stops your panels sending electricity back into the lines while engineers are out working on them.

If keeping a few essentials running during an outage matters to you, that needs to be planned in from the start. Some battery setups can be designed to provide backup power, but not every system does it, so it's worth asking about before anything is fitted.

Thinking about solar panels for your home? Before you sign anything, here are five questions worth asking any installer:

1. Will someone survey my roof in person, or is the quote based on a satellite photo?
2. How have you sized the system around the way my household actually uses electricity?
3. How have you allowed for shading from chimneys, trees or next door's extension?
4. Who do I call if something stops working, and how quickly will they respond?
5. What paperwork will I get at the end, so I've got it if I ever sell the house?

A good installer will be happy to answer every one of these in plain English. If the answers feel vague, that's worth noticing.

Myth: solar panels only work on a south-facing roof.

Not true. A south-facing roof does well around midday, but east and west-facing roofs still generate plenty. East catches the morning sun and west picks up the afternoon and early evening, which can line up nicely with when many households use the most electricity: breakfast, after school and cooking tea.

Lots of homes put panels on both sides of the roof for exactly that reason. What really matters is shading, the condition of your roof and a proper look at how your home uses energy.

"Do I actually need a battery with my panels?"

Honest answer: it depends on when you're home.

Panels make power during the day. If the house is empty from 8 till 6, most of that power goes back to the grid while you're out, and you're buying it back in the evening when everyone's in, cooking, washing and charging.

A battery stores what your panels make in the day so you can use it later. If someone's home most of the day, you might get on fine without one to start with.

There's no one right answer. It comes down to your household's routine, which is exactly what we talk through on a survey.

"Is it even worth it in Wales? It's always raining." ☔

It's the question we get asked more than any other, and it's a fair one.

Solar panels run on daylight, not sunshine. Grey days still generate power, just less of it. Long spring and summer days do the heavy lifting, and a battery lets you keep what you make in the day and use it in the evening when the kettle, oven and telly all come on at once.

What actually matters for your home is which way your roof faces, how much shade it gets, and when your household uses the most power. That's what a proper survey looks at, not the weather forecast.
