TIME TO HAND OVER THE REINS AND HANG UP MY BOOTS .

However the horsebox lives on .😊

Travel Two Horseboxes is now being run by my son Lawrence and Susannah at their Horsebox Workshop Ltd which is located near Bristol Airport

They are continuing to work with my coachbuilder of many years producing new build 3.5 , 3.95 and 4.5 ton gross boxes thus ensuring the quality, strength and longevity of these boxes continues .
They are also continuing with the business ethos of one to one communication with customers , bespoke building to allow customer input into both spec of vehicle and design of box and offering an after sales service which goes above and beyond .

Although the Travel Two box is ready for work when completed , a wide range of optional extras can be fitted at the workshop which include sinks /hobs , beds , extra storage , horse washdowns etc etc

In addition they will take on some selected brokerage sales and are particularly interested in Travel Two secondhand boxes knowing how well they stand the test of time (and horse vandalism 😁)

Worth mentioning here that they are also continuing with their own Crossover model and of course the mainstay of their business , repairs , refurbishments , design alterations , preps for MOT 's , preps for sales , annual health checks etc on all horseboxes .

Finally just a note to say that overall I have really enjoyed running my little business for the last twenty two years .
Many customers have become personal friends .
I was fifty three when I started the business which was born out of my experiences /adventures of transporting horses 😱
The motivating force in starting the venture was financing my passion for helping animals .
This continues unabated but now I need to spend more time with them without the demands of running a business in my advancing years 🤗 .

TWO BUDGET BOXES FOR SALE ON BEHALF OF CUSTOMERS

Both built on 2005 chassis , both pre owned by Travel Two .

One is a Racemaster build (affectionately known as "Florence" 😊)

Tested to November 2026 mileage circa 125k payload 1.020 and lots of service history .

Double external tack locker

These are probably the strongest build on the 3.5 ton market being steel framed and aluminum clad .

The other is a Chaigley build

Tested to August 2026 mileage circa 132k lots of service history ( I have known this box all it's horsebox life from 2012 ) payload circa 900 kg but this could be improved if jump barrier removed

Introducing" Maisie "

Maisie was built by Travel Two in 2013 which was when she acquired her name .

Masie is built on a 2008 Vauxhall Movano now with a mileage circa 123,000.
She has been very well maintained with no expense spared(lots of service history ) and was resprayed a couple of years ago .
She has the Travel Two design with a separate horse area and an emergency rear exit .
Fully adjustable light weight aluminum central partition .
Large horse dimensions
Two external tack lockers
Light and airy interior
Barn doors above the ramp
Payload will be around 1 ton ( don't expect more as Maisie has a sturdy , safe construction )

Photos were literally taken on arrival , she was collected from over one hundred miles away and drove faultlessly through high winds and torrential rain 😊

We intend to fit a new camera system and just give the girl a spit and polish .....
The price then will be £15,000 but if you want to offer her a home without camera or a good groom I can sell her a little cheaper ....

NEW BUILD IN TIME FOR THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY ?

I have a choice of Peugeot Boxer L4 (extra long wheel base ) .
The advantage to these is that they can stay at 3.5 ton gross and you just benefit from a more spacious groom's area or they can be uprated to 4.5 ton gross .

Donor vehicles are 2019 mileages ranging between 85k and 100k , prices ranging from £7,500 to £9,500 which means your new build will come in below £30,000 all inclusive .

However if you prefer a Master or Movano I can source these too within your budget .

There are many new entrants to the new build market , so someone wanting a new build has a bewildering choice in what has become a highly competitive market .

Many years in this business, so much experience in producing these boxes .

Many years of transporting horses myself so actually know the perils and pitfalls😱 and offer a design to make the build as horse safe and user friendly as possible .

They have a proven longevity , I quite often get them back to sell secondhand after they have had ten or more years use, they may need some cosmetic attention but the structural integrity is unchanged from the day they were first sold as a new build .

THE KEY TO SELLING

PREPARATION , PRESENTATION and PRICE

I do hate those adverts which say :
"First to see will buy "
Not sure why this phrase annoys me so much , perhaps because it is so trite it makes me cringe or because it feels like pressure on a viewer to buy ?

However my last three brokerage boxes have actually sold to their first viewer so if you have a box to sell it might be worth a no obligation chat ?

PREPARATION

I won't take on horseboxes with obvious snags unless the seller is comfortable with allowing me to assess and advise on work which is necessary to achieve a sale at a good market price .
No buyer really wants a filthy box with heavily ingrained dirt so a thorough valet is first priority .
No buyer wants to buy a mechanical problem , or one likely to develop because of failure to change a cambelt , neglect of a light on the dash , brake or tyre advisories on current test etc
No buyer wants to spend thousands of pounds on a box with rubber peeling off the wall , a monstrously heavy ramp , a dropped and dragging partition etc

PRESENTATION

Once the box has scrubbed up well and all the little or even larger snags have been sorted it can then be presented at it's best .
Buyers are spending a lot of money so they must be allowed to take their time on any viewing , ask as many questions as they want , have a test drive themselves and not feel pressured into an on the spot decision .
At the very least they should be allowed to "sleep on it" because sellers who actually book in same day viewers so they can tell the morning viewer someone else is coming in the afternoon , or inform the afternoon viewer who has just driven for three hours that "sorry the box sold this morning ", actually deserve to be put in the stocks 😆
Third party inspections should always be encouraged

PRICE

Now the horsebox is looking and performing it's best a good market price can be achieved ,hopefully to the first viewer.
There is no need to offer it at a "bargain basement " price but equally there is no point in over pricing and allowing a box to become stale on the market .

An unladen weight of 2.460 giving it a payload of 1.040 this is a high quality robust build .

Horse dimensions are 7'2" chest to tail and 7'10" headroom so will carry a very large horse in comfort .

1. This is a Topline build on a 2014 3.5 ton Peugeot Boxer mileage circa 98k .
I believe Topline built for some high value brand names before producing them under their name , so opportunity to get a high end build without the "top brand" price tag .
Actually not set the price yet (!) but expect around £23k

2. This is a Travel Two build on a 2009 Vauxhall Movano chassis mileage circa 78K
Price on this one is £18,000

BEFORE THE RENAULT MASTER

This page is only intended to discuss small horseboxes in general , it is not to promote a particular build .

It is a spin off from some of the issues discussed on my website

Hopefully some readers will join in with what they like about small horseboxes , what concerns them and where they can gain any information , advice or support they need .

I have chosen for my cover photo an early form of horse transport
But this page will only be dealing with motorised horseboxes 😀

Before the Renault Master choices were fairly limited in the 3.5 ton range , Ford Transits , Ford Ivecos, Bedford CF and LT35's spring to mind

The best known coachbuilder name was Lambourn and although high mounted their small boxes managed to give a stability that was terrifyingly absent in some of the other small boxes which gave a white knuckle drive and lots of rock and roll .
We were always told to be cautious navigating kerbs as it was all too easy to turn the box over 😱
Some were so under powered I remember a couple in Devon who had to unload at the bottom of a hill and then load again at the top
I suppose in those days when we hacked to most events any horsebox was seen as the ultimate luxury whatever it's shortcomings .😁

Then came the Renault Master in the late 80's which revolutionised the small horsebox market .
Horses rear facing between the axles on a low centre of gravity largely eliminates the rock and roll , internal head heights could be increased without compromising stability , and split ramps made one person usage easy .

Not everyone was convinced by their safety in those early years though ....most commonly it was the single back axle which gave rise to concerns so I was often asked what would happen if a back tyre blew .

I had a first hand experience of just how stable these boxes were when driving one home which I had just purchased.
A back wheel actually spun off on the M4 while doing 50mph and I was left skating along on the back axle until I could bring it to a halt on the hard shoulder At no point did it feel as if the box would tip over .
But the loss of a wheel was something that did happen on occasion with the MK1 model .

There are still a few MK1 Renault Master horseboxes on the road , these tend to be the steel framed aluminum clad ones whose bodies stood the test of time better than their GRP contemporaries
I still see the odd Kingfisher build come up for sale with bodies that have lasted well over twenty years on chassis over thirty years old
Pure nostalgia ....the real trucking experience with that great long gear stick and the engine roaring away between the seats .

In the early years there were most definitely safety issues in many of the structures and designs which these days have largely been addressed so I can run through these in my next post.

I think I am correct in saying Huish did the first van conversions in the 1990's and these were built to an unrivalled standard for many years .
